How to download and install the Google Play Store

The Google Play Store is a treasure trove of apps and content. Sometimes it is necessary to manually install the Play Store if you unintentionally uninstalled it or want to revert to a previous version to avoid bugs. Here’s how to download and install the play store , so you can try out the new features before the rest of the crowd.

A note on Google Play Store version numbers

The Google Play Store version numbering system might seem a bit confusing at first, but it’s easy to get a feel for it. If the jumps between the numbers look strange, it’s simply because Google hasn’t publicly released the interim versions.

Please note that the following guide is for owners of an Android device with a licensed version of the Play Store installed. We recognize that sometimes it is necessary to reinstall or restore the Play Store.

Looking for a previous version of the Google Play Store?

The latest version of Google Play is version 11.1.15 and as usual most of the changes are under the hood and are aimed at making it easier to operate. So we couldn’t find any significant changes to the user interface or new features. If you download the update and see any apparent errors, check out our guide to Google Play troubleshooting.

How to install Google Play Store?

The easiest way to install the Play Store will already be familiar to you if you’re a TipTech enthusiast – just manually install the Play Store APK. An APK is the Android equivalent of an .exe program on your computer.

Instead of downloading an app from the Play Store, you just need to install it yourself without using the Play Store. We even have a handy guide to help you:

  • You will find below how to install APKs outside of Google Play Store

This is of course very useful for knowing when the app you want to install is not in the Play Store itself.

There are two ways to install Google APK on your device: directly on your phone or with your computer. We’ll do the easy option first.

Install Google Play only with the phone method

  • Activate unknown sources going in Settings> Security , then select Unknown sources and activate it. Don’t worry, unknown sources are simply locations outside of the Play Store, which is essential if you want the Play Store itself. (Remember to turn this off by tapping again when you’re done)
  • Using your device’s browser, navigate to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version from Play Store.
  • You may receive a message warning you that “this type of file may damage your device”. Ignore it (trust us) and hit okay .
  • Open the APK file (you can tap download complete in your notifications menu), read the new permissions (if any) requested by the new version of Play Store, and then tap Install.

Install Google Play using a computer method

If you don’t have a data or Wi-Fi connection on your device, you can download the APK to your computer instead. The same process applies:

  • Activate unknown sources on your device.
  • Using your computer’s browser, navigate to XDA Developers forum or APK Mirror to download the APK for the latest version from Play Store.
  • Connect your device to your computer with a USB cable and copy the APK file to your Android device.
  • Launch the APK file, accept the permissions and tap Install.

Google Play Store troubleshooting

Google Services Framework is an essential service that allows the Play Store to communicate with the apps on your device, allowing for automatic updates, etc. If these functions stop working or you have other problems, the service may be problematic and you need to clear the cache on Google Play Store and Google Play services. To do this:

  • Go to Settings> Applications
  • Scroll to Google play store , tap it, and then tap Clear cache.
  • Do the same for Google Play services
  • This should fix most of the issues you will encounter with the Play Store.

Note: depending on the type of device you have, it may need to be rooted to manually install the play store, but that’s a tutorial for another day.
