We’re so used to living among smart objects: smartphones, smartwatches, smart TVs, etc. We are now looking at a smart trash can. That’s right – this idea, which had been launched on a crowdfunding platform, is now a real product ready to appear in homes around the world. However, are the smart features enough to make up for the high price? We are here to find out.
What is a smart trash can?
Now it’s easy to get the wrong idea here. Xiaomi’s smart trash can won’t take the trash for you (if that’s what you had in mind), it won’t recycle or help you sort your disposables. There is no LED display at the top, no sound effects or other high tech upgrades. Instead, Xiaomi’s Smart Recycle Bin can focus on the practical side of things. The main feature of the smart trash can is that the lid opens automatically when you are nearby. This means that you don’t have to touch the learning van or even bend over to throw the trash. But that’s not all. Let’s see what else the smart can offer.
Xiaomi smart trash can: does the heavy lifting for you
Here are some main features of the Xiaomi smart trash can.
Automatic lid opening
As mentioned above, this is one of the main features of smart trash cans. Thanks to an intelligent sensor, the bin detects movements and approaching objects from a distance of up to 35 cm and opens the lid automatically. This is a practical feature in several ways or in different situations. First of all, it saves you the trouble of having to open the lid manually – which, let’s face it, most people don’t like it. Plus, you won’t even have to bend down to put the trash in the trash, as it will detect you from a distance of 35cm.
Although this is a very useful feature, it is not a novel idea when it comes to waste handling. Pedal bins allow you to achieve much the same result without paying too much for the word “smart” in the title.
Now that is something most of us will appreciate. Bad odors from the trash can be a huge nuisance in a home. In addition, they will attract flies and other insects, which will make the situation worse. Standard trash cans generally do a very good job of keeping your trash cans hidden, but often fail to keep odors sealed. In this regard, the Xiaomi dustbin sealing mechanism is a major plus.
Automatic waste packaging
Another useful feature is that once the trash can is full, the garbage will automatically be placed in the garbage bag, for you to take out. This is something quite useful in everyday life, as you won’t have to get your hands dirty to pack the trash.
Bad automatic replacement
While you are taking out the trash, your smart trash can will automatically put a new water bag in place. Again, this is a great time saver that also saves you the hassle of cleaning the trash if you threw something out when the new bag wasn’t in place yet.
It is more or less that. Is it sufficient? This question is difficult to answer because we don’t have much to compare. There are only a few other smart trash cans on the market – and most of them are still in the crowdfunding phase. Some promise to activate additional features via an app that will let you know when you’re about to run out of trash bags (yes, there will be an app for that) – but that’s basically what happens.
Xiaomi smart trash can: blends into any design
To be honest, the first thing that drew us to Xiaomi’s smart trash bin wasn’t her brain, but her looks. Made entirely in matt beige, it is in fact a very nice looking household appliance, very discreet too. The box is 40 cm high, weighs 3.5 kg and has a capacity of 15.5 liters. Its ability to blend into any interior is a solid selling point, as Xiaomi’s smart trash can will fit right into an office, studio or kitchen.
Xiaomi smart trash can: is it worth it?
In the end, it all depends on the price. Even with a 33% discount, putting your garbage in the automatic opener will cost you a penny less $ 80 . That’s a pretty hefty price to pay for the convenience of an automatic lid and bag replacement. Maybe in a few years we will see trash cans smart in every home – but at this point in time (and at these prices) we’d say they’re generally seen as niche products for those who like high tech in their homes or are willing to pay extra for a interesting design.
