Winter sales 2021 postponed: new official start and end dates

We agree, this year 2020 has really turned things upside down and it is clearly not yet ready to end, because we must expect that the current health crisis will continue to disrupt our plans for the ‘next year ! As evidenced by the recent declarations of the Ministry of the Economy, on December 4, 2020: the Minister for SMEs, Alain Griset, has announced a change of dates for the traditional winter sales! The latter were postponed for several days. We tell you everything.

Dates, winter sales, 2021

The 2021 winter sales postponed by two weeks!

Originally, the 2021 winter sales were scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 6, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-containment, the Confederation of French traders (CCF) and the artisan traders of the metropolitan areas de France (CAMF) have requested that this date be postponed. The Ministry of the Economy has thus decided to put it back by two short weeks. Thus, it was announced that the start of the winter sales is scheduled for January 20, 2021 and will end on February 16, 2021, or a month later.

It should be noted, however, that some metropolitan departments will be subject to an exception. The ministry declared that the departments with the bordering geographical situation – such as Meurthe-et-Moselle (54), Meuse (55), Moselle (57) as well as the Vosges (88) – will benefit from derogatory dates which should be communicated in the coming days.

A postponement for the good of traders

In the end, it is not really a surprise given that the good summer sales plans for 2020 had already been postponed due to the current health crisis. In all cases, the goal is to allow merchants to replenish their cash registers (after the period of total or partial store closures) before going on to the sales long awaited by consumers! As CCF and CAMF explain, “It is vital for businesses to be able to sell at the ‘right price’, without price reduction, for several winter weeks in order to be able to replenish cash flow. ”

Rules and instructions to follow

When the time comes, sellers will have to follow several strict rules and guidelines regarding sale products, their price, and sale advertising.

Thus, only the products ” offered for sale and paid for at least 1 month before the start of sales Can be put on sale. In addition, only these products may also be the subject of a supply specially intended for sales a few days before January 20, 2021.

Regarding the price, businesses are required to specify the price reduction compared to an actual reference price. They also do not have the right to increase the price of goods which will be the subject of sale a few days before D-Day (January 20). Otherwise, price reductions displayed in the window are also prohibited.

As for the advertising on the sales, they must all mention the date of the beginning of the sales, but also the nature of the products on sale. Those who do not respect these instructions concerning advertisements incur a fine of 1,500 euros.
