Free, well thought out and practical, Winamp for Android is one of the best audio players and music library manager on Android. However, in the face of particularly active competition, we regret the absence of an “equalizer”, support for FLAC, WMA and AAC formats to find covers and downloads of additional metadata. However, its clear interface, translated into French and devoid of advertising, its ease of use and its synchronization device will appeal to a large audience. To discover without hesitation!
On Android, “Music” the built-in audio player and music library manager by default is not a major asset. Although effective, it is far too limited in terms of functionality and ergonomics. Unsurprisingly, on Google’s Android Market, alternatives are jostling and competing for the favors of an increasingly demanding audience. Among the contenders paying as free, we find among others PowerAMP, MixZing, DoubleTwist, MortPlayer and Astro Player. In this area, we will now have to rely more on the famous Winamp NullSoft in final version in March 2011. Clubic invites you to discover this free solution designed for Android. What does it offer? What is it worth? The answer in the Clubic test!
Real alternative to “Music”, Winamp for Android will allow you to easily read, manage and synchronize your music library from Windows. Child-friendly, it will automatically detect audio files on your SD card, recognize metadata and covers, and will support MP3, M4A, WAV and OGG formats. For the moment the FLAC, WMA and AAC are not in the game. Not to spoil anything, it has a sober and pleasant interface, translated into French and devoid of advertisements.
Getting started and Functions:
When you open the application, you will find a well-thought-out welcome screen allowing you to access the main functions of Winamp. You will be able to return to it at any time by clicking on the famous “Lightning” button. First, you can choose to browse your library by albums, artists, songs, or genres. In addition, you will be able to perform a quick search in your music library, both written and oral, with excellent results.
You will also be able to create your playlists and use smart lists, recently added, recently read and most read. Winamp requires, the Android application includes a “SHOUTcast” radio player allowing you to search, listen to and add to favorites thousands of internet radio stations around the world.
There is also the “Free Music” service offering the possibility of discovering new artists in “streaming” and of downloading a song from their album for free. Remember, however, that these friendly, but bandwidth-intensive services are to be used preferably with a WiFi connection.
When a song is played, the application will display the title, the artist and the cover art. By tapping in the center, you will bring up two buttons to access the artist’s information and news, but also to search for his name on Google, YouTube, Amazon and Winamp. As for the playback options, in addition to the play, pause, next, previous, fast forward, fast rewind, fast movement in the stream, you will find repeat modes and the “Shuffle” random play mode. Regarding the navigation functions, you will particularly appreciate two positive points. A pane mechanism will allow you to view the playlist at a glance. In addition, you can move from one title to another by performing simple horizontal swipes on the cover, extremely practical and intuitive.
Not stopping in such a good way, Winamp will offer you the possibility of easily synchronizing your music library by WiFi via the Winamp application on Windows. To do this, you just have to go to the settings side first and check the “Activate Synchronization” box. Then, you will need to start Winamp on your Windows computer connected to the same wireless network as your Android device. In your media library, you will click on the “device” menu. You will find your device among the items discovered. You will then have to double click on its icon. The following request will then appear on your Android device: “Authorize the WiFi association request from Winamp”. All you have to do is tap on “Authorize” to switch your Android device among the “Attached” devices.
Once this operation has been completed, you will be able from Windows and via WiFi to view your music library, read music files remotely, download these files, manage metadata, perform complete synchronizations or automatically fill in your Android device. You can also manually send your files from your Winamp music library in Windows to your Android device. You just need to select the file (s) and then drag and drop them onto your device in “Devices”. Your files will be instantly transferred, but unfortunately without the album art.
Settings and Widgets:
On the parameters side, you will have the possibility of activating the automatic assembly in USB, of activating the connection to the Winamp desktop under Windows, of managing the WiFi parameters and of activating the “scrobblage” towards the Last.FM application. In addition, you can change the name of your device, consult the help menu, activate the headphones control, but also add the Winamp playback control on the lock screen. Well thought out, this device will prove to be extremely practical. Regarding Widgets, Winamp is not to be outdone. Widgets come in two dimensions. The first gives access to the play, pause, next, previous, repeat and shuffle functions. The second will be responsible for displaying album covers and metadata in large characters.
