As you know, the 4.0.2 firmware prevents jailbreaking via jailbreaking.
But with this modified version of PwnageTool, you will be able to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS (old or new iBoot) to firmware 4.0.2.
Of course, this is an unmodified version by the dev-team, so we cannot guarantee a result.
You will need this

1. Connect the iPhone 3GS to USB
2. Make a backup on iTunes in case then close iTunes
3. Launch modified PwnageTool given in prerequisite
This opens a pop-up with copyright, click OK and to start.
We can notice that PwnageTool has a button to switch to “DFU” mode in the top menu, which will be useful at the end of the jailbreak process. In the menu,
second icon, select: ” Expert Mode ” Select your iPhone device and click the blue arrow to continue.
Then begins the search for firmware 4.0 for the iPhone on your MAC.
Pwnagetool cannot find the firmware, the solution. If you do not find the firmware it is because by downloading it your download manager to change the firmware extension from IPSW to ZIP just rename the extension to IPSW
Make sure you choose the one that corresponds to version 4.0, then click on the blue arrow to continue
Then click on “General” and start customization (icon at the top left)
Attention very important!
- If you are using an original SIM card ie delivered with the iPhone 3GS for purchase. Example. You have an Orange iPhone 3GS and you use an Orange SIM card then you should not check the box “Activate iPhone”
- If you are using a non-original SIM card ie not delivered with the iPhone 3GS at purchase. Example. You have an Orange iPhone 3GS and you use an SFR SIM card then you must check the box “Activate iPhone”
In order not to update the baseband and therefore to unlock the iPhone 3GS. PwnageTool itself decides to check the following boxes
- Automatically remove Bootneuter.app
This step is purely optional, you can skip this step if you wish!
Thanks to this window you can add the repository in Cydia and install all the applications you want in this way when they are put on the custom firmware of the iPhone you already have lots of applications. Return to the “Sources” section and add the sources you want. Now do “Download Packages” and select the applications you want to install, then click on Add in the queue. Make sure everything is correct and click on the blue arrow to continue. Obviously, this step is optional and you can skip it if you are not interested!
In the end you select Cydia and Icy (they are already selected by default)
You can change the boot and restore image ^^
Deselect “Startup Logo” and “Restore Logo” to have the original Apple boot or click on “Create / Search” to replace the images then click on the blue arrow.
Now click on the “Generate” button written in red in the previous screenshot. This opens a window where you can choose where to save the Custom Firmware (we recommend the desktop)
Choose as name for example iPhone_4.0_Custom.ipsw in order to differentiate it from the original firmware 4.0 then you must click on “Save” to start building the custom firmware!
At some point while the program will create the custom firmware, you will be asked for the system password and at the end you will find the new file. ipsw on your desktop if this is the location you have chosen to save it on your Mac
You will then have this message once the operation is finished!
Normally, you should find an .ipsw on your desktop.
Rename it to .zip (change .ipsw to .zip) and unzip the archive. Inside, you should find a file called “kernelcache.release.n88”. Replace it with the one previously downloaded in the archive.
Close the zip, and compress the file. Then change the extension .zip to .ipsw.
Normally, you should be able to restore with this firmware and have an iPhone jailbreaker in 4.0.2.
Of course, no one from the iPh team is held responsible, and we have not tested this version of PwnageTool: it is at your own risk!
Info. If at the launch of Cydia there is no source and the icon is white, add this source: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7
then refresh the data 😉
Info 2. We advise you to stay in 4.0 / 4.0.1 until the dev-team finds a solution!
