Tips for iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro Max cameras

Deep Fusion – Activate and Use

With Deep Fusion, the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max in iOS 13.2 have camera technology that ensures more detailed shots in poor lighting conditions. Behind the marketing term "Deep Fusion" hides the so-called "computational" photography. And behind this technical term, there are sophisticated algorithms and programs that calculate the shots, analyze the respective pattern and its structures, and merge everything into a single photo. The resulting image is of higher resolution. It shows more detail than a photo taken without deep fusion.

Deep Fusion is not a dedicated mode that can be turned on and off. This function activates automatically when the lighting conditions are too good for the night mode, but too bad for the intelligent HDR. apart from a more detailed photo, you don't notice that Deep Fusion is or was active. This is exactly what Apple wants. There is no small icon and no EXIF information to indicate that it is a photo of Deep Fusion.

However, there are a few things to consider regarding deep fusion:

  • Deep Fusion only works with wide angle and telephoto cameras, not with the ultra wide angle camera. The latter does not have the necessary focusing pixels.
  • In the iOS settings under Camera, you must deactivate the "Photo capture outside the frame" composition settings to benefit from Deep Fusion. These two functions are unfortunately mutually exclusive, so you have to choose one.
  • Currently, there is only one method to undoubtedly identify a deep fusion photo as such. The Metapho application integrates such a function and signals a photo "Deeply Fused" in the view of the corresponding metadata.

Out of frame – More flexibility

In the previous point, we mentioned this function. We explain it here. "Capture outside the frame" is a function of the settings of the iOS camera application. If enabled, the camera automatically takes additional photos and / or videos in parallel with the next wide angle camera.

This has the advantage of allowing you to change the photos section later. This means that you can not only zoom in, but also zoom in from the original image section.

Night mode

Night mode is not a stand-alone camera mode, but a function that is automatically activated or offered when the lighting conditions are particularly low. An active or available night mode can be recognized by a small round icon in the upper left corner of the camera application. If this icon is yellow, the mode is active. If the icon is white, the night mode is available but not automatically active.

Depending on the lighting conditions and other factors such as the stability of your iPhone or the use of a tripod, the night mode automatically selects an ideal exposure time which is displayed in seconds.

The exposure time can be increased or decreased manually. As for the night mode, it can be temporarily deactivated for the respective shots. Please note: you should keep in mind that always pulling the exposure time manually to the maximum does not necessarily lead to better results.

Quickly switch between video modes

Since iOS 13.2, you can now switch between different video modes, more precisely between resolutions and frame rates directly in the standard camera application. Just press the mode display. Previously, you always had to go to iOS settings to select the desired video capture mode.

Of course, users who often want or need to switch between modes will usually use a more professional camera application from a third-party manufacturer, because the standard iOS camera application is intentionally and basically reduced to full automation. However, this little update is eagerly awaited and useful.

To switch from one resolution to another and from one frequency of images to another, simply press the display of the same resolution at the bottom or top right in the video mode of the application of the camra (see screenshot).

Portrait mode has it all!

Originally, the so-called "portrait" mode was only possible with the telephoto lens. But with the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro, you can use the wide-angle camera for portraits with a particular depth of field.

In addition, you can apply the deep blur effect not only to faces, but also to animals and objects. You can also set the focus point manually by simply tapping. But sometimes you get better results when you use automatic object recognition.

Use of third party applications

The standard iOS camera application is, as already mentioned, designed for fully automatic operation. The only adjustments that can be made directly in the application are manual adjustment of focus points and exposure. That's what Apple wanted. The application should be as easy as possible to use for the user community according to the motto "Point and Shoot".

If you prefer more special features and manual settings, you can use many third-party camera apps that Apple enthusiastically promotes in the App Store, its retail stores, and at events. Developers have direct access to the camera system and can therefore create complete applications that go beyond the standard camera application. Examples include the FiLMiC Pro video application that Apple presented on stage an international audience of millions of people during its latest iPhone event. We can also cite the Specter photo application that Apple read "iPhone application of the year 2019" just a few weeks ago.

Here are some recommended camera applications, some of which I have used personally for many years and which can also be found on my iPhone 11 Pro:

ProCam is an application recommended for manual photography, night photography and long exposure.

Halide is a premium camera application that offers a balanced mix of manual and automatic camera functions. It is optimized for RAW photography and offers other features to provide maximum photo quality in all situations.

Specter comes from the same developers as Halide and is designed for long exposures, not only for night photos, but also for day photos.

The Adobe Lightroom app is primarily a powerful photo editing software, but it also offers a very interesting camera function for HDR photos.

As the name suggests, NightCap specializes in night photography and is one of the best options for taking photos in critical lighting conditions. RAW photography and astrophotography are possible.

Even if the standard camera application offers a time-lapse function, SkyFlow offers many more camera settings and manual settings. In addition, a editor is integrated to convert and edit time-lapse recordings into videos.

ProMovie is an alternative recommended FiLMiC Pro for enthusiastic video producers. It is used for manual camera settings, including manual focus and better file formats for optimal video quality.

FiLMiC Pro

FiLMiC Pro is the video camera application preferred by many Pro users. Whole movies and music videos have been recorded with this app, including Lady Gaga's latest hit "Stupid Love".

FiLMiC DoubleTake

DoubleTake is a multicam application that allows current iPhone models (iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max) to record two Full HD videos with two cameras simultaneously.

Apple's smart battery case

Finally, we recommend that you take a look at Apple's smart battery case for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. Unlike the smart cases of the old models, those of the iPhone range introduced in 2019 have a dedicated camera button. This not only allows you to launch the standard iOS camera application when the iPhone is in standby mode, but the button also serves as a trigger.

In addition to its smart cases, Apple extends the battery life of current models of iPhone up to 50%, which is very useful for long excursions, vacation trips or hunting patterns. Without forgetting that the tuis serve as protective cover and thus combine three functions.
