The research firm App Annie has just published its report dedicated to mobile applications trends in 2020. Unsurprisingly, TikTok has achieved colossal success by becoming the most downloaded application of the year, surpassing a certain Facebook. Already in 2019, TikTok had exceeded one billion downloads, and made the father of social networks tremble in the process.
In fourth place in 2019, TikTok thus took three points in just one year, relegating Facebook, WhatsApp Messenger, and Zoom to second, third and fourth position. A good performance when we know the difficulties encountered by the Chinese social network.
TikTok is a hit, despite US sanctions
At present, the app is still considered a danger to US national security. Convinced that the app was used by the Chinese authorities to collect users’ personal data, the US government chose to ban TikTok and WeChat from the Google Play Store and the App Store.
If Facebook is therefore removed, the social network founded by Mark Zuckerberg still remains the application with the most monthly active users, ahead of WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Instagram. As for Tinder, the online dating service is the application that records the most expenses from the users.
$ 112 billion in revenue for Android and iOS
Among other data reported by App Annie, we learn that revenues generated by Android and iOS have reached a record high of 112 billion dollars, an increase of 25% compared to last year. Unsurprisingly, games account for 71% of that total revenue, while iOS is responsible for 65% of those earnings.
Question download, iOS and Android register cumulatively 130 billion downloads, an increase of 10% compared to 2019. The explosion of streaming, e-commerce, videoconferencing and games apps during the lockdown is mainly responsible for these good figures.
