The iPhone 12 are now compatible with 5G in France. Through an iOS update, Apple finally activates the mobile network on smartphones sold on the French market. It is therefore possible to connect to the 5G network of Orange, SFR, Bouygues Télécom and Free Mobile (once it is activated). We explain how to activate 5G.
Despite the arrival of 5G in many cities in France, it was until recently impossible to connect the iPhone 12 to the mobile network deployed by Orange, Bouygues and SFR. An operator update, deployed in parallel with the iOS 14.3 update, finally unblocks the situation.
After discussing 5G at length during the October keynote, Apple was slow to provide the correct operator settings for French operators. To ensure that everything works correctly, the Cupertino company wanted to carry out more experiments before activating 5G, to the chagrin of telecoms and their subscribers.

How to activate 5G on the iPhone 12?
The update, pushed by the operators, was authorized by Apple a few days ago. The firmware to unlock 5G on the iPhone 12 is therefore being deployed. All operators are affected, including Free Mobile, whose 5G network has not yet been activated. To check if the update is already available on your device, we advise you to follow the maneuver below:
- See you in Settings of your iPhone 12
- Go to General
- Press on Information
- If the update is available, a window will automatically offer to install it
- Then go to the Cellular data (in Settings)
- Go to Options, then in Voice and Data
- Choose 5G enabled or 5G automatic
If you opt for “5G enabled”, the 5G network will be permanently enabled. In order to reduce the impact of 5G on battery life, Apple also offers an “automatic 5G” setting. This mode allows the iPhone to automatically switch from 4G to 5G according to your needs and uses.
