Launched on July 10, 2008, the App Store celebrated its 3rd anniversary this Sunday. It was launched at the same time as the iPhone 3G and iOS 2.0.
This online store allows the installation of third-party applications and gives developers free rein to satisfy the users of the pomm smartphone. But the App Store was mainly used, its beginnings, to strengthen iPhone sales and secure a larger share of the market.
The App Store is enjoying increasing success with today, no less than 500,000 applications available, very attractive prices offered by developers and numerous promotions. The arrival of the iPad has only reinforced this success since 100,000 applications dedicated to the apple tablet are already available.
A large advertising campaign entitled: “There is an application for a” presented all facets of the App Store in 2008 and made it possible to make the possibilities offered by third-party applications more widely known (entertainment, intelligence, location, navigation , office automation, etc …). The availability of in-app micropayment has enabled developers to more widely offer free or trial content before paying for full functionality of an app. It also served to offer additional paid content to extend the life of some games.
For its part, Apple has paid $ 2.5 billion to developers and remains, despite the presence of the Android Market, Microsoft Marketplace or the Ovi Store, far ahead of its competitors.
What will the App Store look like in 3 years? Will it still be as attractive as it is today?
We discuss it on the forum.
