The American highway authority, NHTSA, asks Tesla to recall 158,000 cars following the discovery of a bug in the screen of the potentially very dangerous dashboard. This may permanently stop working while driving. It is not yet known whether the problem also affects models sold in Europe.
NHTSA asks Tesla to recall 158,000 Model S and X sold in the United States. These vehicles are all affected by a bug that can make the dashboard screen completely unusable while driving – and permanently. Drivers then lose access to the reversing camera, temperature controls, and Autopilot driving assistance systems, which can turn out to be an accident. Only a visit to a repair center can solve the problem.
According to NHTSA, the affected vehicles are Tesla Model S sold between 2012 and 2018 and Model X sold between 2016 and 2018. The problem is with the flash memory chip used in these vehicles. This 8GB eMMC NAND memory accompanies the Nvidia Tegra 3 processor which ensures display on Tesla screens. The problem is that over the years this memory fills up. When the vehicle is at 8 GB, the bug manifests itself.
The screen then stops responding. NHTSA explains that the occurrence of the bug is inexorable after 5 to 6 years of use. The bulk of breakdowns should thus occur in 2022 if nothing is done. Tesla recognizes the problem but has yet to accept the vehicle recall. To believe NHTSA the problem could not be fixed via an OTA update. But that remains to be demonstrated.

The agency believes that these updates “do not go far enough”, mainly because the rear view camera is now mandatory at the federal level and the occurrence of the bug means that access is lost. We note that this is not the only problem found on the first Tesla vehicles. The dashboard screen was readily touched by problems, in particular, yellowing.
