The Tesla Model Y electric SUV was officially presented by Elon Musk. Very inspired by the Model 3, it comes in four variants: a standard available from $ 39,000 (currently unavailable) and others focused either on autonomy (from € 63,000) or on performance (from € 70,000). Here is all you need to know.
Tesla presented its new Model Y SUV on March 15, 2019 in the United States. Elon Musk took the opportunity to do the show, announcing a vehicle that concludes the project S3XY (for Model S, 3 X and Y). This new kid takes many features of the Model 3 but with different dimensions and a reworked design. Let’s find out in more detail.
Autonomy, performance and safety: the Tesla Model Y technical sheet
Unsurprisingly, the Tesla Model Y SUV comes in several versions, allowing customers to choose whether to prioritize value for money, performance or range.
Tesla Model Y Standard
- Range 370 kilometers
- 0-96 km / h in 5.9 seconds
- Max speed up to 190 km / h
Tesla Model Y Long Range
- Range 480 kilometers
- 0 to 96 km / h in 5.5 seconds
- Max speed up to 210 km / h
Tesla Model Y Performance
- Autonomy 450 kilometers
- 0 to 96 km / h in 3.5 seconds
- Max speed up to 240 km / h
In terms of functionality, no surprises. There is of course the AutoPilot as an option for autonomous driving. Model Y is equipped with 12 ultrasonic sensors to detect nearby vehicles, warn of potential collisions, and assist with parking. It also has a radar at the front with a range of 160 meters.
The big advantage of the Model Y over the Model 3 is the interior layout and the space available. We end up with a cargo space of 1840 liters (front + rear lockers), unless we decide to add a row of seats (folding) to comfortably seat 7 people. Otherwise, nothing really new in terms of options and possibilities.

Model Y manufactured in Europe should benefit from the latest battery technologies formalized by Tesla. Finally, note that the Tesla Model Y is one of the safest vehicles on the market with an NHTSA rating of five stars.
Price and release date
Tesla offers several Model Ys in Europe. The SUV will be available in more versions, including a basic one available in the United States from $ 41,990. In Europe, it will be necessary to turn to the most expensive models at the start. The first deliveries will take place in the second or third quarter of 2021. Tesla should meet the deadlines thanks to its Berlin Gigafactory, and the fact that the Model Y has few spare parts.
Here are the prices of the different Tesla Model Y:
- Tesla Model Y Standard without options: from $ 41,990 (recently available in the United States but still unavailable in France)
- Tesla Model Y Long Range: from 63,000 €
- Tesla Model Y Performance: from € 70,000
Tesla is therefore expanding its catalog even further to cover another consumer need with this SUV which, like the Model 3, is positioned at the brand’s entry level.
