See you in February for the Windows 10 beta on your smartphone

During the press conference which has just ended at the Microsoft Campus (in Redmond, USA), there was talk of Windows 10 for laptops and desktop PCs. But not only ! Joe Belfiore also spoke at length about the future of Windows Phone and revealed some of its new features.

What’s new in the OS?

If the appearance, and in particular the home screen of Windows Phone, will not undergo radical changes, the OS only improves over time. The new system will benefit, like Windows 10 for computers, from the famous Universal Apps, which have an identical code, regardless of the operating system on which they run (Windows 10, Windows Phone and even Xbox One). One of the first software to take advantage of this system will be the photo application, which we will find sometimes on Windows Phone, sometimes on Windows 10. The two sister applications will even be able to synchronize with each other.Image 2: Appointment in February for the beta of Windows 10 on smartphone

Finally ! The new Office suite is coming!

Another novelty concerning applications, and not the least: an original Office suite, perfectly adapted to small screens. Word, Excel and PowerPoint will be easier to understand, despite the small size of mobile screens, and not only for viewing documents. New versions of these applications should make it easier to create and edit presentations, more suited to a touchscreen device. And even the Outlook messaging application is about to undergo a big facelift, by proposing for example the deletion of mails with a simple swipe to the left of the screen.

When is it available?

Unlike Windows 10 for PC, which will benefit from a new beta from next week, the new Windows Phone will be released a little later. We will have to wait until February to take advantage of it. And to install it, it will probably be enough to download the free application Preview for Developers. Note to conclude that there was never really any question of Windows Phone during the whole conference, but rather of Windows 10 for smartphones and tablets. Because the mobile OS shares the same kernel as its computer counterpart, and many of its features are common (Cortana, notifications, energy management and even the system configuration tools are similar).
