Samsung is currently developing a 600-megapixel photo sensor for smartphones, says a famous informant. Expected in the years to come, this huge photo module would improve the recording of videos in 4K and 8K. Anxious to compete with Apple and Huawei in the field of photography and video recording, Samsung has launched a real race for megapixels.
In 2019, Samsung unveiled a 108-megapixel photo sensor. Designed in association with Xiaomi, this photo module has been integrated into the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20. An improved version of this photo sensor should be found on the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra, expected in January or February 2021.
Unsurprisingly, the South Korean giant wants to go even further. A few months ago, Samsung completed the production of a 150 megapixel sensor equipped with Nonacell technology for smartphones under Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888. The module should land on the market as early as next year. At the same time, the manufacturer is also developing a 250 megapixel sensor.
A 600 megapixel sensor that takes 12% of the back of smartphones
That’s not all. According to information collected by Ice Universe, famous informant of the smartphone world, the world leader in mobile telephony is also working on a 600 megapixel photo sensor. “Samsung is actually producing 600 megapixel sensors ” says Ice Universe. He accompanies his tweet with a document apparently designed by Samsung Isocell, the division dedicated to photo sensors.
We learn that the development of the 600 megapixel sensor will allowimprove video zoom rendering in 4K and 8K. According to Ice Universe, the sensor measures 1 / 0.57 inches and will take up 12% of a smartphone’s back surface. “Isocell will evolve in order to solve the problem of the prominent camera unit” specifies the diagram. Concretely, this developing technology makes it possible to improve the rendering of images (especially in low light) while limiting the space reserved for the photo block, which has become more and more imposing on our smartphones.
Samsung had already officially mentioned the arrival of a 600 megapixel photo sensor last April. At the time, the manufacturer rather intended the module for autonomous vehicles, drones and other connected objects. We’ll tell you more as soon as possible.
