Personalize your Galaxy S8 or Galaxy S8 +
That’s it, despite their relatively high price, you fell for the Galaxy S8 where the Galaxy S8 + from Samsung? But you want to go even further by making the most of your new smartphone? The device contains tens and dozens of small features, sometimes well highlighted, sometimes well hidden. Here’s how to get there the fastest and easiest way in the world.
Configure the screen in its highest definition
By default, the screens of the Galaxy S8 and S8 + are not configured to display in their maximum definition. They are indeed set to 2200 x 1080 pixels, while they are able to take advantage of a maximum definition of 2960 x 1440 pixels. To do this, go to the icon Settings from the phone and then head over Display and on Screen resolution. Set the display cursor to 2960 w 1440, and voila: you now have the optimal definition for your smartphone.
Activate fingerprint, face or iris recognition
- Go to the settings icon, and press the Lock screen / Security functions. By clicking on Fingerprint reader, you activate the method of unlocking the smartphone by fingerprint. You will be asked to position your finger on the back of the device, right next to the photo sensor. You will have to move your finger several times, so that the sensor can scan your entire fingerprint. Note that you will need to enter a PIN code beforehand if you haven’t already done so (to allow someone else to unlock the smartphone, or if your fingers are wet or covered with gloves).
- If you prefer the smartphone to recognize you based on your face, this time go to the Settings> Lock screen / Security> Face recognition functions. You will then be asked to align the position of your face with the inside of the frame that appears on the screen. Again, you will be asked to enter a PIN if you haven’t set it yet.
- Finally, if you want to use iris recognition rather than the two aforementioned methods, go to Settings, then Lock / Security screen, and finally press the Iris scanner function. You will then be asked to look at the screen of your smartphone, keeping it 25 or 30 centimeters from your face. A little advice: it is better not to wear glasses. As in the two previous cases, it is essential to define a PIN code to access this functionality
Find your mobile in case of loss or theft
Take the lead: if your smartphone is lost or stolen, locate your smartphone using the tracking function. This is accessible from the Settings> Lock screen / Security> Mobile tracking function.
Set up the quick launch of the camera
As the S8 has a virtual home button, it is impossible to double-click it to launch the camera, as on the old models. But there is a way to take advantage of a similar shortcut, by pressing the power button twice in a row. To do this, simply activate the Quick Launch app function. Photo, accessible from the Settings> Lock screen / Security options.

Configure the “Always On Display” option
The “Always On Display” feature appeared with the Galaxy S7, but the S8 benefits from a few small innovations. It is now possible to control the music or check the arrival of new messages at a glance, without ever having to unlock the smartphone. And since the S8 has an AMOLED screen, this option should not ruin the battery life of the device. To activate this function, go to Settings> Lock screen / Security> Always on Display. This is where you can also set the Always On Display screen style.
Activate and manage the automatic maintenance function
If the S8 is a power monster with its Exynos 8895 (especially in games), there is a way to make it even more efficient on a daily basis. Samsung has developed with the device a tool that can monitor the amount of memory used, the state of the battery and the amount of available storage. Even better: there is an option to clean all unnecessary applications in the background, while another function offers you to choose from different power modes (optimized / game / performance / entertainment). To access this function, go to Settings> Display> Side screen. Then click on Side flaps, taking care to make sure that this option is activated. You can then control all the applications on your device, and make sure that each one does not use any more resources when it is not on the screen.
Select the color display mode
No one perceives a color in exactly the same way as another person. It is therefore relevant to know that apart from its adaptive colorimetry mode, the S8 also offers AMOLED Cinema, AMOLED Photo modes and a classic display mode. Click on the System settings icon, then go to display> Screen mode> Adaptive display. The two AMOLED modes have warmer colors and often a better level of color reproduction. And if you don’t like any of these options, you can also adjust the color balance as you see fit.
Activate the blue light filter
To enjoy a good night’s sleep, it’s best to avoid your smartphone or computer at all costs before going to bed. But if you can’t do without it, at least dim the blue light coming from the screens. You can obviously reduce this brightness manually, but you can also have the smartphone do it for you at a fixed time. This function is increasingly present on smartphones, and it is therefore natural that the S8 and S8 + take advantage of it. Go to Settings> Display> Blue light filter. You can therefore adjust the opacity of the blue light filter, but also create a calendar corresponding to the times when the smartphone must activate and deactivate the filter in question.
Customize your display themes
The new environment of the Galaxy S8 is clearer and corresponds more to what we know under the “pure” version of Android 7.0 (in short, Samsung has overlooked the flourishes). But it may not be to everyone’s taste. Good news: it is possible to fully customize the interface of your smartphone. To do this, go to Settings, then choose the function Wallpapers and themes. You will be asked to download the Samsung app. You can then browse through the most popular themes or those recently arrived, to find new wallpapers, themes, icons and custom layouts. Note that, while most of these options are free, some are paid.
Activate the Game Launcher
Want to play quietly without being disturbed by an alert indicating a call or a message waiting? By activating the Game Launcher function, your smartphone will organize all your games in one place. To access the Game Launcher, go to Settings, then click on Advanced functions, and finally press the Games function. Activate the Game Launcher function (by default it must be deactivated). You will then be able to block alerts while you play, mute a game, or even configure the smartphone in “high performance” mode to take advantage of increased graphics.

Configure a secure folder
On your smartphone, you probably have sensitive and personal data, whether it be your photos, your tax return or a photo of your identity card. It is essential to store this kind of data in a totally secure folder. Such a function exists on the S8 and S8 +, and is accessible from the Settings> Lock screen / Security> Secure folder options. Once this option is activated, you will have to select the method of access to the file in question: facial, iris or fingerprint recognition, the choice is yours.
Personalize the home screen
Before charging your smartphone for applications, first choose the type of home screen you want to use. This function is accessible from the Settings options > Display> Home screen. You can select the size of the apps grid on the Home screen, make sure you use an app store or not, and even choose which apps to hide.
Activate one-handed use
Even if Samsung claims that the 18.5: 9 display of the Galaxy S8 and S8 + makes it easier to use them with one hand, it is not always easy to reach the corners of the screen (especially on the 6.2 ″ screen of the S8 +). Fortunately, Samsung has included a one-hand mode, accessible from the Settings> Advanced functions> One-hand use mode. You can use this mode whether you are left-handed or right-handed, and select two modes for reducing the screen size: either using a movement (by swiping the screen diagonally), or by tapping 3 times followed by the Home button on the smartphone.
