Recharge your computer with the sun

Image 1: Recharge your computer with the sunAU Optronics has developed a 14-inch solar-powered laptop. Its partner in this project is none other than SunPower, the largest manufacturer of photovoltaic cells in the United States. The computer will be presented in mid-November in Japan. Its particularity: it is equipped with a solar collector. This takes up all the space reserved for the keyboard. AU Optronics opted for a sensitive keyboard and touchpad for input. Transparent, they let in the light that can reach the solar collector.

This technology doesn’t support all of the computer’s energy, “but in the future, the efficiency of charging will increase with the quality of the solar cells,” said Katie Chen, Taiwanese representative of AUO. The current prototype makes it possible to reduce the consumption of the computer on battery by 23%. Note that such an installation does not disfigure the machine. Each plate is only 2.1 millimeters thick.
