Picture In Picture: what is it and how to activate this mode?

Did you know that you can use picture-in-picture (PiP) mode for videos from your web browser? Even better, did you know that this feature is available for free, and that you can watch YouTube on your desktop without having to pay the Premium subscription? Here's how to use this PiP mode to view videos in the floating window while you keep doing more!

Shortcuts:

What is picture-in-picture (PiP) mode?

The picture-in-picture mode comes from television. Thanks to this particular display method, it has been possible for many years to display two video sources simultaneously, such as the HDMI input (where your console is connected) and the TV antenna input.

PiP works very simply. The main video source is displayed in full screen while the secondary source is displayed in a small square generally located at the bottom right. In some cases, you can choose between a few preset positions for the secondary source or, on mobile devices like Android and PCs, the small window can be placed anywhere and even resized!

<p style=On a PC, it is not possible to use PiP mode in this way (that is to say, using a video entry) but you can still view the videos read in Google Chrome in a pop-up window to continue watching and listening to them while focusing on other tasks.

Does my PC support PiP mode?

If you use a laptop or PC with Chrome 70 or later installed, you can use almost any video source (like YouTube, Dailymotion and others) in PiP mode not only in the browser, but also when you use other programs.

Method 1: Right click

Yes, it's as simple as a. By clicking with the right mouse button on the video currently playing, a drop-down menu will open and among the items listed, you will find the one dedicated to the picture-in-picture. On YouTube, you have to make two consecutive right clicks.

Method 2: official extension

There is an even simpler and faster method, although it seems impossible:

  • Go to the Chrome online store and look for the extension called Picture-in-Picture Extension (by Google)
  • Download the extension and allow Google Chrome to install it
  • Voile! At the top right, next to the omnibarre (the search and address bar), you will see a new button appear. Just start playing a video and with a single click on this button, you will activate PiP mode.

Conclusion

It is very interesting to note that the picture-in-picture function works without problems even outside the main window of Chrome. You can drag the floating window to any position, and by dragging it from one of the sides or corners, you can resize it. The floating video player has a Play / Pause button, a button to go back to play the video in the card and an X dedicated to the closing of this floating window.

The drop-down menus of various programs such as Photoshop or GIMP (which I have tested) will always be displayed in the foreground covering the video. It's great, because you don't have to continually move the video to playback if you keep it at the top of the screen.

In all other cases, the video remains in the foreground, without having to click on it. Don't be afraid to keep doing something else while you are listening to a video tutorial like I did when writing this article!
