The OnePlus 9 Pro will be IP68 certified, reveals a reputable informant. Like its predecessor, the OnePlus 8 Pro, the future flagship would be waterproof and water resistant. On the other hand, the standard OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9E, a more affordable variant, will ignore this official certification.
The OnePlus 9 Pro would be the second OnePlus smartphone to benefit from the IP 68 certification, announces Max Jambor, a young German informant, in an article published on Voice. Launched last May, the OnePlus 8 Pro is currently the only phone in the Chinese brand’s catalog to be officially water resistant.
Before that, the manufacturer estimated that the cost of the IP68 certification was much too high and risked causing many disputes. To compensate for the lack of official certification, OnePlus relied on promotional spots showing under what circumstances its smartphones are waterproof. Unfortunately, this workaround did not allow OnePlus to reassure its users.

No IP68 certification on the OnePlus 9 and 9E
Under pressure from fans, the Chinese brand was forced to change its mind and invest in an IP68 certification. Thus, the OnePlus 9 Pro, the most premium model of next year, can be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. If you submerge the smartphone in more than 1.5 meters of water, the pressure may damage it. Note that this is still the most comprehensive water resistance certification available.
Sadly, the standard OnePlus 9 and the affordable OnePlus 9E will be deprived of the IP68 certification. The Chinese brand therefore reserves this costly certification for its most high-end smartphone. On the cheaper versions, OnePlus probably seeks to reduce costs as much as possible so as not to have to inflate the selling price. However, they could still be waterproof. They simply won’t have the official IP67 or IP68 certification to prove it and reassure users.
The latest news is that OnePlus will unveil the OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9E from March 2021. We’ll tell you more about the subject as soon as possible. While waiting for more information, feel free to give your opinion in the comments below.
