Mate 30 Pro: the superb smartphone without Google that Huawei does not release in France

Mate 30 Pro: the superb smartphone without Google that Huawei does not release in France

The Mate 30s are official. There are currently three of them. If they are enticing with their Kirin 990, 5G module and triple photo sensor, they are not planned for France at the moment. In addition, with them, we will have to do without Google services. A big concession.

Huawei has just presented its Mate 30. If the recent leaks announced four, only three have been presented: Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro and Mate 30 RS Porsche Design. The Mate 30 Lite will undoubtedly arrive in a second time.

No Mate 30 in France

First paved in the fed up, they will not go out in Europe for the moment. Only Asia and possibly Russia would be affected by its launch. Huawei tells us that they are thinking of a way to offer it to the French public. We believe in it, especially since Huawei presented the prices of the Mate 30 in euros at the end of its conference.

No Google services in the Mate 30

Second block, the Mate 30 are released on Android, but in an amputated version of Google services. Moreover, it is no longer a question of Android 10, but of EMUI 10. At no time did a presenter speak the name of the Google OS during the press conference.

It will therefore be necessary to do without Chrome, Gmail, Google Photos, but especially the Play Store. In any case, it will not be possible to take advantage of it right out of the box. Installing these applications via their apk should work, but it is not a very intuitive solution for the general public and above all, we would have a missing security brick, which is present in Android 10, between the system and the applications.

AppGallery, the poor man’s Play Store

To consolidate its position, Huawei even highlights the figures for the use of its own services, which will serve as an alternative on the Mate 30. According to the brand, more than 570 million people use their home applications each month. For our part, we can add that the Huawei appstore only has a few thousand applications and that Netflix, for example, is not one of them…

Huawei sells to circular APN

Once these points have been dealt with, we can turn to smartphones. The Mate 30 Pro is the model that most upsets the rules. Like the Mate 30, it adopts a circular camera. Named Halo Ring, it is inspired by the lenses of Leica cameras, says Huawei. A justification like any other for a design that is increasing at the end of the year (Motorola, OnePlus).

As on the P30 Pro, Huawei brings together three Leica sensors: a wide-angle (40 Mpx), an ultra wide-angle (40 Mpx) and a 5x optical zoom (8 Mpx). The Mate 30 Pro enhances this set with an ultra-wide angle twice as well defined and by enlarging their openings. We pass respectively from f / 1.6 f / 2.2 f / 3.4 on the P30 Pro to f / 1.6 f / 1.8 f / 2.4 on the Mate 30 Pro. What capture much more light. Moreover, the Chinese manufacturer does not hesitate to compare the results of night photos with the Galaxy Note 10+, for example, even going as far as “trolling” by displaying a black image for the latter and a very bright scene for his Mate 30 Pro.

Mate 30 Pro, a rounded design and (almost) without buttons

At the front, the 6.53-inch Oled screen (2400 x 1176 pixels) is curved, very curved. This Horizon Display, that’s its name, would also be the most rounded of its generation with an angle of 88 °. A solution that may seem surprising, but which is justified by removing the volume button. This is replaced by a double click on an edge of the screen, which brings up the setting. Then just slide on the same edge to modulate the sound. Rid of this unsightly outgrowth, the Mate 30 Pro also tries to crowd out the top and bottom edges by reducing them to less than 5 mm. This is achieved, among other things, by the use of speakers under the screen with Huawei’s Acoustic Display technology.

The notch still sits above, but it too has been reduced. However, it has multiple sensors: the selfie camera, a 3D camera, a proximity sensor and a gesture sensor. And the latter is not trivial since it introduces a new feature: control of the smartphone by gesture.

Gesture functions, eye tracking and analysis

In the demo broadcast by Huawei, we see that we can scroll on its screen without even touching it. At a distance of around ten centimeters, the sensor recognizes the movement of the hand and scrolls the display.

Another innovation of the Mate 30 Pro is eye tracking. The smartphone does not take its eyes off the user. If he changes position relative to him, he will rotate his screen so that it is always in the right direction. As a final step, we have the AI Private View. This system allows you to hide the notifications that may appear on the locked screen if the 3D camera detects a face other than that of the owner of the device.

Kirin 990, the best processor of the moment?

But the Mate 30 is also and above all the Kirin 990, the new flagship of Huawei’s processors. Presented at IFA 2019, it was detailed today. Its CPU is 23% faster than the K980, ditto for its GPU which gains 39% of performance. And what about the artificial chip which would be 460% more efficient.

Theoretical data that it will be good to judge once the product in hand. This Kirin 990 comes with 8 GB of RAM on the Mate 30 Pro.

On the battery side, we are entitled to a 4500 mAh battery. It would last more than 9 hours in continuous use in 5G, compared to 6 hours for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+.

Mate 30 Pro 5G faster than Galaxy Note 10+

Let’s talk about 5G. An edition of the Mate 30 Pro is equipped with it. If this new network is still only being deployed, the tests are complimentary. And Huawei does not hesitate to be lathered once again by advancing grandiloquent figures. The Mate 30 Pro 5G would be 50% faster than the Note 10+ 5G on this network. The example of Speedtest given gives more than 1500 Mbits for the Mate 30 Pro against not even 1000 Mbits for the smartphone from Samsung. Again, this would have to be verified in real conditions.

Mate 30 RS, or the smartphone over 2000 €

If it will cost 1099 € for the 30 Pro in 256 GB, 1199 € for its 5G version with the same storage, it will go up to 2095 € for the Mate 30 RS.

For this price, we are entitled to a smartphone designed in collaboration with Porsche Design. Little change from 30 Pro. It gains a central strip which cuts its rear shell. It is also in a more noble material, leather. The RS is available in two finishes: black or red. It gains performance in passing with 12 GB of RAM and increases to 512 GB its internal capacity.
