The iPhone XR is driving Apple’s growth in India, so much so that the Cupertino company is now the fastest growing smartphone maker in the country.
Smartphone shipments to India continue to grow and reach a record level in 2019. The country has grown by 29% on an annual basis, mainly driven by low-cost smartphones and more favorable tax regimes for companies that start production in the country. Thanks to these incentives, in addition to Apple’s significant investments to start producing iPhone locally, Apple is now experiencing significant growth in India.
The iPhone was the fastest growing “brand” of high-end smartphones in 2019, up 41% from the previous year. This growth is mainly due to the price drops of the iPhone XR and iPhone 11.
In contrast, Samsung recorded a 2% drop in sales in the country.
As mentioned earlier, Apple's growth in India is directly linked to the company's investments in manufacturing in the country, as well as to the Indian government, which lowers the tax burden on companies operating in India. Unsurprisingly, in recent years, Apple has successfully started production of several iPhones in the country thanks to the collaboration of Foxconn and Wistron.
