According to several rumors circulating recently on the Web, theiPhone 8 would not have the Touch ID fingerprint sensor of its predecessors. Apple would have opted for a new facial recognition technology instead 3D, which would extremely fast.
According to the Asian media Korea Herald, the facial recognition function of the next iPhone 8 could capture and identify a user’s face by a few millionths of a second only. Even better, it should operate in the dark and provide more security than the current fingerprint sensor.
In addition to conventional sensors, the iPhone 8 would have a new “structured light” sensor. This would use infrared light to determine the depth of the different points on the face. This information would then be used to create a 3D mesh, which would be compared to the one saved when setting up the new iPhone.
The advanced facial recognition capabilities of the iPhone 8 would allow the Apple firm to remove the physical Home button and the Touch ID sensor. Users would no longer have to affix their fingerprint to unlock their phone, or to make transactions with Apple Pay. Everything would be done by facial recognition, which should be more convenient and faster.
