Three-quarters of smartphones sold in the third quarter worldwide were running on Google’s Android mobile operating system, according to research firm IDC, showing that the giant is once again scoring points in its battle to Apple.

Sales of smartphones with the system Android almost doubled in the third quarter to reach 136 million copies elapsed.

Android conquered in the third quarter 75% market share of the smartphone against a market share of 57.5% the previous year. Android has notably benefited from a significant decline in the operating systems of Blackberry and Symbian. The market share of the former declined to 7.7% against 9.5% the previous year, and that of the second fell from 14.6% to 4.1%.

In the third quarter, Apple’s market share went from 13.8% to 14.9%. Microsoft’s operating system equipped 3.6% of smartphones sold in the third quarter.

Next quarter figures will include sales ofiPhone 5 and should be more to the advantage of Apple.
