The Belgian-iPhone editorial team tested the iPhone 4S for several days. Is this a new product in the true sense of the term or more simply a transition model? The answer in this test.
marketed since October 14 in some countries, the editorial office of Belgium-iPhone has already been able to get their hands on Apple’s latest product when it will be offered in Belgium at the end of the month. The opportunity to let you know how we feel before we can decide to get it … or not!
This year, therefore, we will not have finally been entitled to an iPhone 5 whose rumors of recent months suggest that it could have been a thinner, lighter model including a new screen. We will therefore be entitled to the iPhone 4S, a product derived directly from last year's model due to its design but whose features and specifications have been revised upwards. Review.
No surprise about the shapes of the new device, they faithfully reproduce the design of last year's iPhone 4. A design ultimately very appreciated by iPhone aficionados, last year, even if some of them would have liked to have less thickness as already proposed by the new Samsung Galaxy SII. There's also no change to the iPhone 4S screen, it is exactly the same type of Retina screen already used by its predecessor.
However, there are two rather visible differences, it is the integration of two slots located on either side of the upper sides of the device.
Thanks to this contribution, the new iPhone no longer suffers from the “AntennaGate” phenomenon, namely a drop in the network when a certain pressure is applied to specific locations on the device. In addition, this overhaul of the antenna gives the iPhone 4S an even better ability to “hang” on the network! (see our video above)
also take into account the fact that the iPhone 4S can be considered, for the first time, as "an international telephone". Indeed, in addition to being able to communicate through the UMTS / HSDPA / HSUPA and GSM / EDGE standards, the latter can also be used through networks which use the CDMA standard. A standard used in particular in the United States and massively in Asia.
Another difference, more discreet this time, is the slight downward shift of the Mute buttons and the volume control. A modification undoubtedly brings by the revision of the antenna of the new machine. A small modification which will not have any incidence with the Bumper type cases where the iPhone 4S is always placed there very correctly!
– A5 processor, 512 MB of RAM.
It is the same dual-core processor already integrated in the iPad 2 but running at 800Mhz (against 1Ghz for the tablet). This difference in speed is explained by the fact that the performance management of the iPhone is completely different from the iPad 2. Apple had to adapt the speed of the processor to preserve as much as possible the autonomy of its device. Which is not particularly a problem for the iPad 2 which can benefit from a larger battery. That said, the performance of the A5 processor integrated in the iPhone 4S has the consequence of being twice as powerful as the iPhone 4! Suffice to say that the performance in terms of video games could be further revised upward since the graphics processing power is 7x that of iPhone 4.
Regarding the RAM, we find the same specifications as for the iPhone 4 since the 4S still incorporates 512 MB of RAM but this time Toshiba brand (exit the partnership with the South Korean manufacturer Samsung). An unchanged specification that will not really have an impact on the speed of the new device since it responds much faster than its predecessor (see our comparative video above). If navigation under the Safari application is now more fluid, applications, they gain speed when launched.
Improvements that also feel when booting the device where the iPhone 4S will take 10 seconds less to turn on when booted (see our video above).
– 8 mgapixel camera and 1080p video recording.
The camera of the iPhone 4S is also entitled to a welcome update since the sensor now passes 8 mgapixels with the ability to film in 1080p thanks to the Apple A5 processor for image processing. The sensor, with a focal length of 2.4, allows greater precision in the reproduction of colors and captures more light. The iPhone 4S claims to be the fastest smartphone on the market for taking photographs. In practice, taking a photo is actually faster, the colors of the photos are more vivid (more contrasts) and as far as video recording is concerned, this one is clearly optimized! The difference between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S is clearly felt.
See some examples of photos and videos below:
– Vido records from iPhone 4:
– Vido records from the iPhone 4S:
As mentioned above, the colors of the photos taken with the iPhone 4S are much more vivid and benefit from less noise (beware, the photos above were taken at the end of the day in a light not really adequate to succeed. perfect shots). Regarding the video recording, you will undoubtedly notice a clearly more fluid image and above all, more stabilized thanks to the system set up in the optics of the device by Apple's partner for the camera / iPhone 4S video (Sony).
During the keynote, Apple’s marketing director Phil Schiller was proud to announce an increase in the autonomy of the device despite the integration of the dual-core processor which is more energy efficient. In theory, the iPhone 4S gains an hour in communication under the 3G network (pass from 7 to 8 hours) but loses an hour of autonomy when used under a Wi-Fi network (pass from 10 to 9 hours).
33% less battery life in standby mode.
When we look more closely at the specifications of the iPhone 4S, we can see that it can go up to 200 hours in standby mode against 300 hours for the iPhone 4! It is therefore 33% less autonomy that the fifth generation of Apple's new flagship product should undergo when it is in your pocket!
In practice and after a few days of use, these small changes are hardly felt in the sense that in any case, the iPhone needs to be recharged daily. Note, however, a slight decrease in battery life, probably not due to its hardware specifications, but rather due to the integration of iOS 5, which turns out to be an even more communicating OS than before. Indeed, features such as iMessage, the new notification system or the new notification center, use data to be able to operate, which can significantly impact the battery of the device depending on your use.
This is the functionality built exclusively into the iPhone 4S! A feature that has been talked about a lot since the marketing of the new machine because in addition to being able to perform “normal” type tasks such as scheduling an appointment, writing an SMS or an e- mail, find out what the weather is like today in your city or another place, everything requires nothing but the simple sounds of your voice, the system also responds to you if you ask it eccentric questions. In theory, this sounds interesting and one wonders if in the end, it would not be a gadget functionality that one will nevertheless quickly put aside. In practice, the functionality is simply stunning because it is not uncommon to be surprised by the precision and the natural tone used when responding. Recall that Siri, that’s the name of this feature, currently supports English, French and German. Other languages are expected to arrive later. Siri is also a voice recognition system in continuous development. A team from Apple has been specially dedicated to developing this feature. Its role is to evolve and refine the answers proposed all kinds of questions that come to your mind!
While owners of the iPhone 4 may be due, the iPhone 4S is a successful device and is an opportunity to upgrade to the iPhone if you don't already have one. It sports a design and robustness that we already know, while displaying improved performance: camera, speed of the process. Siri, meanwhile, will crack the curious and addicted to gadgets. It is therefore a transitional device that one could compare the iPhone 3GS, but which one could not do without after having gotten its speed.
– The prices.
The iPhone 4S undergoes a slight increase in price compared to its predecessor. It is sold on the Apple Online Store in Belgian at the following prices:
– iPhone 4S 16GB: 669.
– iPhone 4S 32GB: 759.
– iPhone 4S 64GB: 879.
When marketing its new iPhone, Apple has also taken care to include a new, stronger USB cable. Reinforcement of the connections that can also be found on the side of the headphones.
– The question.
After reading our review, will you fall for the new iPhone 4S as soon as it is available in Belgium on October 28?
