With the iPhone 4, Apple has introduced its brand new “Retina Display” screen.
The Retina Display of the iPhone 4 has been compared with smartphones: Motorola Droid X, HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, HTC Evo 4G. The tests were carried out by the online magazine PC Mag.
The iPhone 4 displays a resolution of 640 x 960 pixels at 326 pixels per inch, the best resolution ever offered on a smartphone to date.
In terms of brightness :
The latest Apple Retina Display has been rated as the brightest screen (536 cd / m). It’s even twice as bright as the HTC Incredible’s OLED screen.
The previous record held by the iPhone 3GS, considered 25% less brilliant than the new screen of the iPhone 4.
In terms of contrast :
The contrast, this difference between the darkest point and the brightest point is nothing better for the iPhone 4 compared to the Motorola Droid X.
The contrast of the HTC Incredible screen is the most important, especially thanks to its OLED screen. This results in really deep blacks.
In terms of color depth :
Two elements are here to take into account: the hardware elements which constitute the screen but also the operating system.
The Motorola Droid X and the iPhone 4 allow 24-bit color depth. In practice, this amounts to a display of 16,777,216 million colors.
The HTC Incredible and the HTC Evo 4G have a color depth of 16 bits. This equals 65,535 colors.
Regarding color accuracy :
To carry out this test, PC Mag specifies that they used a reproduction of 100% of the SRVB color gamut.
From there, tests have shown that the Motorola Droid X's screen is closest to this base by 100% with only 6% undersaturation.
The HTC Evo 4G’s screen is only 10% undersaturated.
About the screen of the iPhone 4, the latter is undersaturated by 36%. Finally, the HTC Incredible screen is 37% over-saturated.
In conclusion :
For PC Mag, the screen of the iPhone 4 is the most efficient of those that can be found, currently on the market. It offers 24-bit color depth, one of the brightest screens and very good contrast (for an LCD screen).
The Retina Display could have been even better if Apple hadn't limited its color accuracy.
Second place goes to the Motorola Droid X even if PC Mag indicates that the HTC Desire offers excellent contrast, despite its 16-bit screen.
We discuss it on the forum.
