As you know, iOS 5 includes more than 200 new features. This firmware has revolutionized your iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 and this article lists the top 10 tips of the 200 new features. Good reading !
Reminders: Remind me when …
Reminders is a new application native to iOS 5. Ideal for your iPhone to remind you of certain tasks. When you are going to add a task, you can choose how the reminder will be performed. Either on a specific date, or when you go out / return to a geolocated area.
Example: you have to buy bread when you leave your house. Add a reminder then switch the “At a place” switch in the “Notify me” tab in the task options. Check “When I leave” and validate!
Notification Center: Choose the display order
The Notification Center is the main new feature in this firmware. By sliding the screen from top to bottom, a panel where all the received notifications will be gathered will be displayed. The notification center is configurable by going to Settings> Notifications.
In this tip, you will be able to change the display order of these notifications. Useful if for example you want to see the main notifications such as phone calls, reminders, messages or events. They will therefore be displayed at the top, above the weather and stock market widgets. To modify this order, simply tap on “Modify” at the top right then move the elements using this icon:
Twitter: Assign a user’s profile picture to your contacts
Twitter, the micro-blogging social network, has had the privilege of having a complete integration of its iPhone application. Now, you will be able to tweet images, videos, links from iOS applications if they allow it.
In this tip, you will be able to assign profile photos from your Twitter subscriptions to your same contacts in the iPhone address book. It will be enough to have the contact in your address book then Twitter will search for profile photos automatically by email address, Twitter username or phone number. You will need to tap on “Refresh contacts”. Remember to update regularly!
Camera: Lock brightness
For users who frequently take photos from their iPhone, the camera has a hidden function that will lock the brightness and focus.
To activate this option momentarily just leave your finger pressed on the screen, which will lock the brightness which is that currently targeted. This can be useful when you want to block exposure to an object and avoid over-exposure. The final image rendering can be much better than auto focus.
Photos: Create Albums
The possibility of creating photo albums was finally included in iOS 5. Indeed, with iOS 4 this was only possible thanks to the unlocking of the device. This function can be useful if you cannot find yourself in several thousand photos which all illustrate different events.
When you are going to add a new album (Photos> Edit> Add), you will then select photos of Film to put in it (Photos> Filmstrip> Menu button at the top right> Select photos> Add to> Select album). But beware, the photos from the Camera Roll will not be moved but simply copied. A convenient way to classify photos.
Mail: Text formatting
If you want to highlight certain words in your email, this is now possible. Basic functionality such as bold, italic, underline or modification of indentation has now been added to the context menu of the editor.
Simply double-tap on the word to open the menu in black and then tap on the right arrow to scroll through the options.
Safari: Navigate discreetly
Private browsing is a feature that has become common on most browsers for Mac and PC. You can browse the internet without saving any cookies or without keeping a single address in the history. Added to iOS 5, it will do the same for your iPhone.
It is by going to the settings then in Safari that we can find the switch in the “Confidentiality” category. Simply switch it to ON to activate it. The Safari browser interface should normally take on new, darker, more sober colors to indicate whether private browsing is enabled or not.
Accessibility: Personalized vibrator
The personalized vibrator is an original function. Under iOS 4 it was possible to define a personalized ringtone for a contact. Under iOS 5, it is now possible to define a custom vibration. Some of them have already been predefined, but you can also create others.
To activate it, simply go to Settings> General> Accessibility and finally switch the switch to ON to activate the option. Then, you will have to go to the contact to which you want to activate the vibration and modify its file. Select the “Vibrations” tab and at this point, choose the vibration to assign. To create your own, you must tap on “Create a vibration”. A window (as above) will appear and you will have to create a rhythm with your fingers. To read your creation, tap on Play and to stop it, tap on Stop. When this is done, tap on Save at the top right and then select the vibration created. Save your contact card.
Messages / iMessages: Keyboard shortcuts
Are you addicted to acronyms? (word game of the extreme) You will finally be able to type in SMS language while preserving the French language. This will make you faster so you will be faster to send messages.
Here is an example of frequently used abbreviations. If you type “jrv” the iPhone spellcheck will then write “I’m coming” in full. To add one, just tap on the “+” at the top right, enter the expression as well as the shortcuts and save the creation.
Camera: The shortcut on the lockscreen
Need speed to take a photo? With iOS 5, just double-press the HOME button on your device when the iPhone lock screen appears to reveal hidden camera functions. To the right of the slide to unlock will be displayed a small camera icon.
Tap the button and as if by magic, the camera will open. Convenient for people who have a lock code. The speed for taking a photo on the spot is greatly reduced! With this function, even if you have a code, the camera will still open. However, it will be impossible to access photos from the filmstrip. Apple has it all planned 😉
