How to play YouTube videos with the screen off

Playing YouTube videos without the screen on is a tricky business. As soon as your screen turns off, YouTube automatically pauses what you’re watching, so you can’t just stream videos on the go. The default YouTube app does not solve this problem because YouTube would rather we keep our eyes on their ad space, but there are still two ways to play YouTube videos without the screen. We’ve outlined the best below.

Using a web browser

To watch YouTube with the screen off without having to pay any money, you can simply use a free web browser app such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. This method should work on all devices.

  1. Download and install the Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browser on your phone (your device probably already has Chrome installed, but the link to Firefox can be found below).
  2. Go to the YouTube website in the browser, tap the Settings button (three dots) at the top right of the page and check the box Computer version .
  3. Once you have completed the steps above, tap a video to play it. It will continue to be read even after locking your phone.

NewPipe: open source application for background playback

NewPipe is a handy app, but unfortunately it isn’t available in the Google Play Store. Instead, you’ll need to check out the alternative app store, F-Droid. You will find many free open source applications on F-Droid. The service also provides automatic updates of installed applications.

To be able to install F-Droid and the applications it contains, you must allow the installation of applications from unknown sources. To do this, you need to manually activate it in your phone’s security settings.

Now you can visit the F-Droid website in your smartphone browser and download the F-Droid app. Installation should begin immediately after downloading. Otherwise, tap the download complete notification to start it.

After installation, you can start F-Droid immediately. Initially, the list of applications will be empty. F-Droid must first download a list of applications currently available on the server. It may take a few seconds. After that, you can enter NewPipe in the search box. In the search results, press the Install button to install NewPipe.

If you press run, NewPipe will start up and display a red search bar at the top and a completely white screen. Type the name of the song or artist you want to search for.

By default, YouTube videos playing with NewPipe stop when the phone screen is turned off. If you press these 3 dots then select Switch backplan, your video will continue to play even when the screen is turned off.

Use Audiopocket

AudioPocket is an option that does not involve moving away from the Play Store. This app converts YouTube videos from classic Android app to mp3, which then continues to play in the background as a normal audio file.

To use Audiopocket to play YouTube with the screen off, follow these steps:

  1. Open the YouTube app
  2. Find the video you want
  3. Tap on the overflow menu (⋮) next to the desired search result.
  4. Select Share
  5. Wait for the video to be converted to mp3 (you will get a notification)
  6. YouTube audio will start playing automatically as soon as it has been buffered.

YouTube Premium subscription

One of the main selling points of the new YouTube Premium (formerly Red) subscription service is that it offers offline and background access to content. For a monthly cost of $ 11.99, you get access to these features, along with an ad-free YouTube experience.
