How to force start or restart an iPhone

Apple takes pride in developing the most efficient operating system for its phones. However, iOS is still software and bug software from time to time.

In desperate situations where your iPhone becomes unresponsive or apps stop working normally, the only viable option is to force restart.

There are different methods to force restart your iPhone depending on your phone model. So for this article, I will walk you through the force restart process for all iPhone models.

Read on to know which one comes with your particular iPhone.

iPhone (1st gen) to SE

This includes: iPhone 1er, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4/4, iPhone 5 / 5c / 5s and iPhone SE.

  1. Press the home and standby / on button (at the top of the phone) for about 10 seconds until the logo appears.
  2. Give it about 10-20 seconds until the home screen reappears.

Note: this method also works for all iPad models until recently.

iPhone 6/6 Plus / 6s Plus

  1. Press the Home and Standby / Power button (right side of the phone) for 10 seconds until the logo appears.
  2. Give it about 10-20 seconds until the home screen reappears.

iPhone 7/7 Plus

Press the standby / power button and Volume Down until the logo appears.

iPhone 8/8 Plus, iPhone X

  1. Press the button to increase the volume.
  2. Press volume down.
  3. Press and hold standby / on until the logo appears.
