How to clean a sticky keyboard without removing the keys

A mechanical desktop computer is easier to clean because it can be disconnected from the USB terminal. This then allows us to handle it more easily and move it around, which is not the case with a laptop or a MAC. Follow these tips to clean a mechanical keyboard :

  • Turn it over : The easiest way to clean a mechanical keyboard is to turn it over and shake it lightly. This should force out any crumbs, food scraps, lint, etc. inside the keyboard to fall. After turning it over, you can wipe it with a damp cloth to remove any dust.
  • Vacuum the keyboard : You can clean a mechanical keyboard using a small keyboard vacuum cleaner. If you don’t have one, you can use a small sofa vacuum on its weakest power cycle to suck up any leftover dust.
  • Brush between keys : If your keyboard is not very dirty, you can dust it with a keyboard cleaning brush. You can also choose to wipe it lightly with a microfiber cloth.
  • Clean the keyboard with alcohol : The keyboard cleaning methods mentioned above are effective if your keyboard is not very dirty, but how do you clean a sticky keyboard? You can use isopropyl to remove fat on a sticky keyboard. Apply the alcohol (diluted in a little water) to a cloth or cotton swab and clean each key carefully. This is the best cleaning method to effectively disinfect a keyboard.

How to clean a keyboard

Clean laptop or laptop keyboard is more or less the same as cleaning a mechanical keyboard, except for spinning and dusting around. You can also clean a laptop keyboard using a Pear at pressurized air to suck up dirt particles.

However, when the keys or key areas are very dirty, you need to be patient. Lightly dampen a toothpick with water and wipe off any visible dirt particles between the keys. As soon as you are finished, be sure to wipe off any moisture with a dry cloth to avoid damaging the computer.

You can also clean your laptop keyboard by removing the keycap using a keycap extraction tool wired. Be careful when choosing this option as it means that then you will need to replace the keyboard.

How to clean a sticky keyboard: from the inside

Sometimes it may also be necessary to cleaning a keyboard from the inside , especially in the case of a mechanical keyboard. In laptops, this is more complicated as you will have to open the laptop, which is not recommended if you have never done so before.

How to clean a mechanical keyboard from the inside

  1. Unplug the USB connector.
  2. Remove the back part of the keyboard with a screwdriver (be careful not to lose the screws!).
  3. Remove the keys, place them in a colander and rinse them with water. Make sure to dry the keycap individually afterwards.
  4. Lightly clean the empty faceplate with a little isopropyl alcohol and water and dry well.
  5. Replace the dry keys.
  6. Close the keyboard and screw tight.
