Grand Paris: old diesel vehicles will have limited access to the capital from June 2021

Diesel vehicles from before 2006 will be able to circulate freely in Greater Paris until June 1, 2021. After that, their access will be limited. A date put back six months, since this measure was to be effective from January 1, 2021, but the pandemic decided otherwise.

Greater Paris wants to get rid of polluting vehicles. One of the important steps in this process is the limitation of diesel cars of at least fifteen years, classified Crit’Air 4 or more. While this measure was to take effect on January 1, it was finally decided to postpone it to June 1, 2021 after a vote in the Greater Paris Metropolitan Council on December 1. A six-month reprieve established due to the pandemic, which gives the owners of these vehicles a little air. It is indeed difficult to buy a new car when everything is at a standstill.

Thus, in six months, traffic will become very difficult for those without a relatively recent vehicle, even if it will not be completely prohibited. Vehicles bearing the Crit’Air 4, 5 sticker and which are not classified will be affected. This includes vehicles diesel from before 2006, but also gasoline vehicles from before 1997.

Limited traffic, not prohibited

It will no longer be possible to circulate inside the ring of the A86 from Monday to Friday over a time slot going from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. This is only the first step towards a cleaner Grand Paris, since on July 1, 2022, vehicles bearing the Crit’Air 3 sticker will be added to the list, then the Crit’Air 2 in 2024.

The avowed goal is to make the Parisian metropolis a pollution-free place. France’s goal is to ban the sale of new combustion vehicles from 2040. A laudable objective which must however be accompanied by more affordable electric vehicles with greater autonomy than what is done today, unless certain technologies such as induction routes correct this problem.

And you, what do you think of this measure? Do you consider the banning of polluting vehicles essential or do you see it only as a political measure? Tell us in the comments !
