Google is working on Steam support for Chrome OS

Steam on Chrome OS… nothing sensational since Chrome OS – with its own version of the Linux kernel – is able to support Linux applications and Steam has a Linux client.

However, according to information obtained by Android Police With Kan Liu, a product manager for Chrome OS, Google is working on official Steam support for Chrome OS, taking advantage of the Linux compatibility of the Chromebook operating system.

It would therefore be much more than a hack, without it being known, however, whether this support for the gaming platform is done as part of a work carried out in concert with Valve. In addition, there is the question of whether a Chromebook is likely to offer a suitable experience.

Apparently, Kan Liu is betting on the arrival of more powerful Chromebooks and in particular with AMD processors, in addition to the necessary optimizations specific to Chrome OS. Without obviously expecting gaming like a dedicated laptop configuration.

Finally, the astonishing aspect of this information should be placed in the context of Stadia. A Chromebook is a good receptacle for Google’s cloud gaming service. But after all, it would not be the first time that Google's strategic choices have left doubts …
