Galaxy S21: their fingerprint sensor under the screen would be bigger and faster

The Galaxy S21 could benefit from the Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2, the latest revision of the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor (under the screen) from the US supplier. This sensor is 77% larger and 50% faster than the generation found in the S20.

The fingerprint sensor performance of the S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra were not bad, without being exceptional. It must be said that their fingerprint sensor integrated under the screen, one of the first of its kind that Samsung offers on several models since the S10, fishing by its small size and the time required for fingerprint recognition.

However, everything suggests that this will change with the Galaxy S21, S21 + and S21 Ultra, the next high-end smartphones from Samsung. The latter could indeed, according to Sam Mobile, embed the latest ultrasonic fingerprint sensor from Qualcomm, called 3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2.

Qualcomm indeed said during the presentation of the sensor that the latter would be found in high-end smartphones of 2021. Switching to this new sensor would be an important step forward. The sensor is 77% larger (64 mm2 vs. 36 mm2), and is now square rather than rectangular, which should reduce accidental misplacement of the imprint and reading errors. he is also 50% faster, which should give the user experience a boost.

3D Sonic Sensor Gen 2 captures a total of 1.7x more biometric data more than the previous generation, to strengthen the security of the device. Which is not necessarily a luxury given the recent problems noted with the Note 20’s fingerprint sensor and protective screens, among other examples. he Recognizes fingerprints significantly better when fingers or smartphone screen are wet. The icing on the cake: the component makes barely 0.2 mm thick.
