France Telecom participates in Internet censorship in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian government has deployed, through its sole Internet service provider Ethio Telecom, a net censorship. A serious measure, in which France Telecom is directly involved. The company has in fact been running the company for two years.

Jean-Michel Latute, CEO ofEthio Telecom, defends himself by invoking a “decision of the departments”, ensuring that they have “nothing to do with it”. This does not prevent him from noting the practicality of the measure: “It will help us to prevent customers from abusing, by downloading lots of films, for example. It is a very useful instrument. An argument that is hardly admissible, according to La Croix, which specifies that Internet access in Ethiopia is expensive and paid for per use, which effectively limits abuse.
