A new rumor affirms that Square-Enix is already working on an optimized version of Final Fantasy VII Remake and intended for the PlayStation 5. This will be released at the same time as the PC version, which has been the subject of indiscretions for a year. These two launches would occur on the occasion of the lifting of the exclusivity of the game on PlayStation 4.
Last April, Square-Enix presented Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the first episode of a trilogy of games that will take up the entire storyline of the original game. released on PlayStation in 1997, but with a more current rewrite. Difficult exercise here: create a new atmosphere, without damaging the original work. We released a full review of Final Fantasy 7 Remake when it launched on PlayStation 4. And while it is very different from the PS1’s FF7 with a gameplay inspired by that of Final Fantasy 15, it fully deserves to be played.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is exclusive to PlayStation 4. But if you’ve purchased the game and are the proud owner of a PlayStation 5, you can play it on your new console, thanks to backward compatibility. Short exclusivity until April 10, 2021, information written on the game box. This means that, logically, other versions could appear from April 11, 2021.
From the day of Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s release, nine months ago, we knew that Square-Enix was also preparing a PC version. Indeed, several presentation videos were shot from a computer and not from a PlayStation 4. In addition, there is a rumor thata PS5 version is also in the pipeline. A real PS5 version. This implies that this version (as well as the PC version) will benefit from improvements. Indeed, what would it be for developing a PS5 version if not to polish the game?
What improvements can we expect on PS5?
Three questions arise about this rumor. First, what is the content of the improvements in the PS5 version? We expect refined textures and a graphics engine that takes advantage of the strengths of the PS5. We also expect very short load times. But should we wait for additional content? It’s not sure, but it’s not impossible either. Far from it, even. We also believe that it could be offered in Deluxe Edition only, including bonuses. But it’s only an hypothesis.
Then can Final Fantasy 7 Remake come to Xbox Series X? Several rumors evoke this possibility. Once again this is not impossible, since many opus of the saga are available on Xbox. However, the one-year exclusivity signed between Sony and Square-Enix for the PS4 could integrate a longer clause concerning competing consoles. Thus, Square-Enix could develop the game on PS5 and on PC, but not on Xbox.
Finally, last question, do we have to wait the next two episodes of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy on PlayStation 4 ? All publishers will gradually move to the next generation of console. Sony has promised that the PS4 still has a bright future ahead. But will Square-Enix choose to release two versions of these two future games, given the costs? We are not so sure.
