facial recognition on the back photo sensor is for 2019, and with laser!

This year, theiPhone X swaps the Touch ID fingerprint for facial recognition Face ID using a TrueDepth module installed in the front panel and capable of mapping a face using multiple infrared beams.

This technology should end up on the shelves iPad Pro of 2018 as well as on the entire iPhone range next year. As for placing this module also on the rear photo sensor, various rumors have evoked its presence on future models, without guarantees however.

Bloomberg claims, however, that this possibility is being seriously considered and could materialize from 2019, to supplement the possibilities linked to augmented reality enabled by this type of sensor.

But this integration should use a different technology than the analysis of the return of infrared beams to draw a face map. The new approach would this time be based on laser beams, the return of which is measured to reconstruct a 3D model.

The iPhone of 2019 should therefore have two 3D modules, one at the front with the TrueDepth system and the use of infrared beams, and the other at the rear exploiting laser beams.

Apple has reportedly started talking to suppliers of laser modules, such as Infineon, Sony, STMicroelectronics and Panasonic. The sources of Bloomberg suggest, however, that integration will depend on the success of prototype testing.

All of this should help strengthen iPhone’s capabilities in augmented reality, and in particular to strengthen the user experience by making virtual animations always more realistic and in harmony with the immediate environment.

What for example generate shadow effects consistent with ambient light and the display of virtual objects according to the real objects of the decor, with the long term idea of being able to make one indistinguishable from the other.
