Sophisticated tools that allow “ hacker ” iPhone security in order to extract the data appear on eBay, around $ 100.
According to iDropnews, some tools sold on the marketplace are manufactured by Cellebrite, an Israeli company specializing in data extraction. It is a device of this brand that would have also allowed the FBI to solve a murder case in the United States, by recovering data froma protected iPhone.
These devices are intended exclusively for the police and should normally be returned to the manufacturer (Cellebrite) for decommissioning. It would seem that some people with access to the devices do not hesitate to sell them off on eBay. More overwhelming, these illegal resellers would forget to delete the data entirely.
Security researcher Matthew Hickey recently bought a dozen of these UFED devices from Cellebrite and discovered a lot of them sensitive data. He points out that the devices could potentially contain messages and contacts involved in criminal cases. Hickey decided not to delve into this data.
For your information, a new UFED Cellebrite device would cost around $ 6,000.
