It’s a very impressive growth for the parent company ByteDance who had counted 250 million active users per day in January 2019. The addictive video platform TikTok wreaks havoc all over the world, but also in his home country, under the name of Douyin.

Differences between China and the United States

The ByteDance report released yesterday describes user behavior and trends. According to Katherine Wu, a New York-based investor, this report illustrates the cultural differences between China and the United States. The trends between the two countries are incredibly different. Indeed, there are more educational content in China than in the United States for example. Even more astonishing, the users filming themselves dancing (which is very popular, even in France) are, in China, people born in the 1960s. United States, these are mostly teenagers making videos while dancing.

ByteDance claims that Douyin has established itself as the main platform for knowledge, culture and art in China. Indeed, 14.89 million knowledge-based videos were shared in 2019. Educational content has even become crucial for the platform. This category is one of the most viewed categories in the world. TikTok even launched in 2019 a education campaign in India or 200 million users participated.

Finally, the growing popularity of TikTok / Douyin is not to everyone’s taste. This app is still controversial. US senators have warned that user data is sent to China for government processing. It is for this reason that members of the United States military are prohibited from installing and using this application. Some also claim that educational content criticizing the Chinese government has been censored. Of course, this information has not been proven and therefore should not be taken seriously.
