The story began long before the current Internet days, when digital messages were exchanged only between college professors and geek students at universities of technology. The date we are talking to you about is September 19, 1982, in Pittsburgh, United States. On that day, a student at the traditional Carnegie Mellon University proposed the use of a symbol to mark digital messages that shouldn’t be taken seriously.

Scott E. Fahlman, the student in question, invented the happy face 🙂 as a ” joke marker After a false post about an alleged mercury spill left the student community in the end.
From then on, the smiley-mania took hold, and it was incorporated by major communication companies, notably in Japan, where what we know today as an emoji began to develop.
