Dell presents its large high-end laptop

The XPS 17 is presented by Dell as a laptop with a 17-inch screen and yet smaller than almost half of today's 15.6-inch computers …

After having launched a few weeks ago the new version of its ultrabook in 13.3 inch format, the XPS 13, Dell completes its offer today, with the update of its model in 15.6 inch format, the XPS 15, and the announcement of a whole family member, the XPS 17, which, as its name suggests, has a large 17-inch screen.

These two new configurations will be available from May 14 for the XPS 15 (from 1,799) and from June 11 for the XPS 17 (from 1,999). They will also benefit very high level of finish than the XPS 13, with in particular an aluminum chassis, a carbon fiber wrist rest (black or white) and a screen with four very thin edges. And despite this last point, the Webcam (720p Windows Hello compatible) of these laptops of the XPS range is well placed on the upper edge of the screen, and not at the bottom of the screen or in the keyboard as can still be do other builders. We will also find the fingerprint reader integrated in the start button.

For the update of the XPS 15 (model 9500), Dell uses recent components, such as Intel processors of the 10th generation (Core i5 / i7 / i9). They will be complemented by Intel UHD Graphics graphics chips or Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti. For the screen, the user will have the choice between a Full + model (1,920 x 1,200 pixels) and a 4K + touch version (3,840 x 2,400 pixels). For the other internal components, the manufacturer will offer 8 64 GB of memory and an SSD with a capacity ranging from 256 GB 2 TB!

Thanks to its format, larger than that of XPS 13, the XPS 15 integrates, on the sides of the keyboard, an audio system composed four speakers (two 2.5 W woofers and two 1.5 W tweeters). On the other hand, its connection consists of 3 USB 3.1 type C ports, two of which are Thunderbolt 3 compatible, an SD memory card reader and a headphone / microphone jack. In addition, a replicator providing a USB 3 type A port and an additional HDMI 2 video output is provided. The weight of the new XPS 15 is 1.83 Kg (non-touch version) or 2.05 Kg (touch screen).

XPS 17: the big little Ultrabook

The big news from the manufacturer therefore lies in the arrival, in the XPS range, of a 17 inch model, the XPS 17 (model 9700). Finally, not so big finally, because if the configuration does indeed embark a notch 17 inches, the manufacturer announces a format smaller than almost half of 15.6 inch laptops ! This is explained by the four very thin borders of the screen. Indeed, as the latter occupies 93.7% from the surface of the laptop panel, the dimensions of the laptop are minimized. The XPS 17 therefore measures only 37.4 x 24.8 x 1.95 cm, and weighs 2.11 / 2.51 kg (non-touch screen / touch screen).

The future XPS 17 will offer the same variety of components as its little brother, but with even more graphics performance. Thus, the XPS 17 looks worthy of a gaming machine, at least for the most sophisticated model, thanks to the integration of graphics chips Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 Ti or RTX 2060 Max-Q. A new cooling system will take care of preventing too high a temperature rise.

The XPS 17 screen will be either 4K + (3,840 x 2,400 pixels), touchscreen and HDR 400 certified, or Full HD + (1,920 x 1,200 pixels). The configuration will be equipped with the same audio system as the XPS 15. However, its connection will be different, with this time 4 Thunderbolt compatible USB C connectors (instead of 2 on the new XPS 15).
