Beware of illegal Cyberpunk 2077 downloads ! Kaspersky Labs explains that it has identified “several thousand malware infection attempts since last year. In addition to being a game whose release is particularly awaited, the multiple postponements of Cyberpunk 2077 have been a breeding ground for some confusion which has stimulated for several months the volume of searches around the illegal game download.

Kaspersky explains that it has identified a new network of rather disturbing sites. These pirates are indeed trying to divert part of this volume of research by offering Cyberpunk 2077 as a free download. Of course hackers mostly surf search terms in English – these many sites thus appear in the Google results when one searches for the terms “Cyberpunk 2077 free download” – even if in the meantime the search engine seems to have done a little cleaning …

Don’t fall for Cyberpunk 2077 free downloads

According to the antivirus publisher, the sites in question are essentially identical, except for their URL, and sometimes the language. They have one very professional appearance, as evidenced by the capture on the front page of this article. Victims who download the game through these sites get away with running a bogus installer. We can see a progress bar as if everything is going normally, when in fact nothing is happening. After a while the program requires a license key and offers to press a button to acquire it.

Gold to obtain this license, the user must complete a survey, which should normally sound all alarms. But that will not prevent some from falling into the trap. The survey collects personal data such as your phone number and email. (which will likely be used to distribute other malware). According to Kaspersky, the purpose of this campaign is mainly to collect personal data for a subsequent malware campaign.

Once the investigation is complete, the famous license key appears. When the user tries to enter it, the game seems to load before crashing with an error message indicating that there is a missing file. Then the user is redirected to another survey … Besides this attack, you are advised to be wary of your emails, especially if you receive messages around Cyberpunk 2077 on the day of its release on December 10, 2020.
