Crazy developer manages to save Shrek movie to floppy disk

Saving a complete movie on a simple floppy disk is the crazy gamble undertaken by a developer. And he achieves his goal. As proof of the success of his insane project, he posted a video on Reddit. Make yourself comfortable, the Shrek movie will begin soon.

Shrek Film Diskette

Tired of watching 4K movies while enjoying Dolby Atmos or DTS sound? Want to go back to the good old days of movies recorded on VHS in frankly poor quality? A Reddit user might have a solution for you. Even better than the good old VHS tape, he managed to record the movie Shrek on a simple floppy disk… An approach which therefore offers more than appalling video quality.

Thus, the developer u / GreedyPaint had the rather strange idea of wanting to record a complete movie on a small floppy disk like one found on computers of the 80s and 90s. The media in question can store 1.44 MB of data, or even a little more if you increase the number of tracks and sectors when formatting the floppy disk. Comparatively, this capacity represents only 0.03% of the storage space of a DVD 4.7 GB single layer.

Shrek movie now fits on a single 1.44MB floppy disk

For the occasion, u / GreedyPaint relied on a personalized version of the x265 video codec. Using a definition of 120 x 96 pixels and a speed of 4 frames per second, he was able to reduce the size of the film Shrek just 1.37 MB. The floppy disk is finally read on a small device equipped with a Raspberry Pi. It has also developed its own reading interface: at startup, the device launches a very short animation, then requests the insertion of a floppy disk. As soon as it is swallowed by the reader, the film begins. No play button, pause, fast forward …

The LimaTek Diskmaster (that’s the name of the device) just plays the video from A to Z, that’s it. As you can see in the small video below, the image is of poor quality and the video is extremely choppy (4 frames per second!). Only the audio reproduction remains correct.

Even if the attempt is laughing, one can only admire such a feat. u / GreedyPaint is not done with non-standard projects, since it is now planning torecord full movie on vinyl record. An approach which is reminiscent of this other developer, who managed to start his PC under DOS on from this same recording medium.
