CES 2012: TomTom announces a social version of its application

TomTom has announced the next update of its iPhone / iPad application which will integrate social networks. From now on, it will be possible to use addresses of places, parties and friends from social networks to get there thanks to TomTom, and communicate our arrival time to warn them in advance of a possible delay.

Version 1.1 of the TomTom application will soon integrate Facebook and Twitter into the famous GPS navigation tool. With these new options, TomTom will be the first to fully use social networks, not to give the precise point where we are, such as Foursquare for example, but to collect information and communicate others. Thus, the TomTom application will allow you to use the precise coordinates of an event, place or the addresses of your Facebook friends to get there with ease. Even better: it should be possible to communicate your destination and estimated time of arrival to your friends on Facebook, Twitter, by email or by SMS.

This new version of TomTom will be available during the first quarter of 2012 and will be completely free for those who already have the original application. Others can download it for 89.99 euros in the Europe version, 69.99 euros for Western Europe only and 59.99 euros for the Benelux map.

According to recent studies, the vast majority of iPhone owners use Facebook on their device, explains Corinne Vigreux, general manager of TomTom for the general public. By integrating Facebook functions into our TomTom application, we make it even easier to navigate to places and events and meet friends. A process that seems quite logical and that could mark a turning point in the use of GPS software on smartphones …
