The relationship between children and screens is complicated. If they are necessarily confronted with it, they must be supervised with access that is well regulated according to their age. Thus the association 3-6-9-12, made up of teachers and psychologists, recommends support in four stages. First contact with a screen after three years, first video game after six years, first consultation accompanied by a website after nine years, ideally after twelve. The smartphone concentrating all of these uses, the recommendations of specialists therefore fix the age of the first smartphone upon entry to college.

An analysis supported by the rate of equipment of French people today. According to a study Bouygues Télécom, the first smartphone would arrive in backpacks at the age of eleven and a half. Three out of four teenagers over the age of twelve would own a smartphone; they were barely 58% “owners” at the start of the decade.

A source of family tension

Outside of school, parents and children alike (60% and 69% of respondents respectively) agree that the arrival of a first mobile phone generates many conflicts within the family. Main complaints: time spent on your phone, exposure to shocking content and fear linked to the use of social networks.

The Bouygues study admits, however, that parent-child relationships are evolving positively around the possession of smartphones among the youngest. This is done through an increasingly present pedagogy: more than nine out of ten parents educate their offspring themselves using a mobile. And they are 79% to impose standard rules to avoid any overflow: ban on the telephone at the table, in the bedroom at night, monitoring of social publications and additions from friends. Limits relatively well accepted by their young users. Note that two thirds of 12-14 year olds prefer to be deprived of going out today than of smartphone!
