It was in the pipeline, as of June 1, it will no longer be possible to submit 32-bit apps on the Mac App Store.
As on iOS 11, macOS applications must be compiled in 64-bit architecture. If it was already effective for new apps, updates will be blocked from now on.

On MacOS High Sierra, we are already entitled to a warning popup when launching an unoptimized 64-bit app for the first time:
This app is not optimized for your Mac. This app must be updated by its developer in order to improve its compatibility.
To be precise, 32-bit apps will always run on your Mac, as long as you stay on High Sierra. Indeed, it will be the last compatible version of macOS.
The idea is to achieve a 100% 64-bit OS, gain performance, simplify maintenance and improve the whole.
