Apple and Imagination Technologies Sign New Agreement

The British company Imagination Technologies announced that Apple had concluded a new license agreement after the one signed for the first time in 2014.

The new agreement was formalized through a press release posted on the Imagination website. He predicts that Apple will pay licenses to acquire multi-year rights to a "larger intellectual property group" in British society. For the moment, the details of this agreement have not been published and we do not know which licenses are affected:

Imagination Technologies announces that it has replaced the multi-year and multi-functional license agreement with Apple, announced for the first time on February 6, 2014, by a new multi-year license agreement under which Apple has access to a wider range of Imagination licenses in exchange for license fees.

Imagination has been working with Apple for years on GPU design, until the Cupertino company decided to move these operations in-house in 2017. Since then, the value of Imagination has literally plummeted, also due to the opening of a controversy with Apple linked to the payment of licenses. The new agreement should guarantee significant revenues for the coming years.

When the first agreement was reached, Apple used Imagination's PowerVR technology to develop its system on the Ax series chips. In 2017, it started with the A11 Bionic chip that powers the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, Apple using exclusively internal technologies.
