Looking for a free VPN compatible with Netflix? Well, in January 2016, Netflix has announced that it would start blocking the virtual private network aka VPN, which allowed customers outside of the United States to watch US Netflix. Fast forward 1 year Most paid VPN services no longer work on Netflix, let alone a free service.
While Netflix doesn’t reveal exactly how it blocks VPNs, in general, they block the IP address associated with hosting providers commonly used by VPN providers. Which means that even if you install a VPN on Digital Ocean and try to access Netflix, you still won’t be able to bypass geo-restrictions on Netflix.
There are a few blogs that recommend using chrome extensions like Hola or Tor etc. But after testing them I found out that they don’t, so you don’t have to waste time with them.
4 Free VPN That Works With Netflix (2018)
there are a few free VPNs and a proxy service that still works for Netflix. Although don’t expect them to be reliable. Remember you get what you pay for, no free service can be as good as paid. But overall, it can get the job done. So let’s check them out.
None of the following free VPNs are reliable, sometimes they work, sometimes not. However, at least one for the following still seems to work.
1. HomebrewVPN – Free VPN that works with Netflix
HomeBrewVPN is a little-known free VPN that works with Netflix and lets you watch major video and audio streaming sites that are available only to US viewers. This means that with HomebrewVPN, you can get American music and streaming services like Spotify or Pandora no matter what part of the world you live in.
Unlike other VPN services, homebrew doesn’t have a dedicated app, which means you’ll have to manually set up a VPN on your devices.
How to configure HomebrewVPN?
To get started, you’ll need to manually set up a VPN on your device. Each device has a different way of setting up a VPN, you can do that. But in a nutshell, it’s like connecting to a server, for example – specify the server URL and enter the username and password. You can find more information here .
Create a VPN server and enter the following information.
Server type: PPTP or L2TP or OpenVPN Server address: server1.homebrewvpn.comUsername: homebrewvpn-usPassword: homebrewvpn
PPTP users: No encryption or 40-bit encryption or 128-bit encryption is supported.
L2TP users: optional shared key (required by iOS devices): 12345678
The free version of Homebrew works well, but is limited to 512 kbps; means it’s good enough to stream Netflix at 244p to 480p. By testing it for a few days ( last checked in July 2018 ), it worked on my Android (if you have connection issue try restarting your device) but it didn’t work on macOS. And as we see on the comments frompeople on Reddit, it just stops working every now and then. I can’t expect much from a free solution.
2. Ultrasurf – Free VPN that works with Netflix
Ultrasurf is a popular tool for bypassing blocked websites. Unlike other VPNs in this list Ultrasurf is a proxy, a proxy is like VPN in most cases but without encryption.
How to configure Ultrasurf?
Installation is easy. Just download the Ultrasurf Chrome extension and the light up . It does not require any connection or software installation. Once installed go to Netflix and search for ‘The Office (US)’ if you are not in the US and still able to watch this show, it means you have successfully bypassed the country restrictions on Netflix.
It was developed to bypass the so-called Great Firewall of China. However, some people doubt its authenticity since it is the American server. Ultrasurf is definitely unreliable, but for the most part it works fine for Netflix from the desktop. The video quality was poor all along, and, it didn’t work on Android devices.
3. Nord VPN – Free try
NordVPN is one of the few VPNs that still works for Netflix. And although it is a paid service, they offer a 3 free trial that does not require a credit card. However, it does require a valid email address (temporary email address does not work). After the 3-day trial, it’s $ 12 per month if you get the monthly plan or $ 5 per month if you pay for an entire year.
The free version however slows down your connection, for example I have 2MB / s down and 0.8MB / s up, on my regular connection 8MB / s up and 8MB / s up the bottom.
How to configure NordVPN?
I tried the free version of NordVPN on macOS and Android, and it worked fine. The setup is pretty straightforward, create a free trial account, download and install the client, and switch to a specific country. That’s all. Now you will be able to bypass the country restriction on Netflix. Surprisingly, they also support torrents.
After a few failed attempts, NordVPN finally worked on my macOS. Also, the quality of the video was too low. I don’t know if it’s because of a free account or it’s just like that. On Android, it didn’t work even after several tries. I mean it was able to detect the US catalog, but when you click on the title it didn’t play the video. Even after restarting the device or trying another device.

4. Smart DNS Proxy – Free try
Another better alternative is to use SmartDNS as – Smart DNS Proxy.
Smart DNS, unlike a VPN, does not change your IP address or encrypt your traffic, which means your video feed will be much faster. And the best part is, if you can configure Smart DNS Proxy on your router, every device that is connected to your router, will automatically bypass geo-restrictions. There is no need to manually configure on each device.
How to configure NordVPN?
Setting up Smart DNS Proxy is a bit complicated compared to a VPN. To use their service, you must replace DNS server from your computer, smartphone or your router by that of the Smart DNS Proxy DNS servers. You can find the video tutorial configuration of each operating system on YouTube.
Smart DNS Proxy isn’t exactly a free VPN that works with Netflix, it’s a paid service . However, we still include it in the list, due to its 14 day free trial. There is no credit card required either. So if you are looking to watch a new Netflix original for a week or two, you can try Smart DNS Proxy for 2 weeks for free. After the free trial, it’s $ 5 per month.
Free VPN that works with Netflix
So, these are some free VPNs to bypass Netflix’s geo-restrictions. If you are on mobile you can go with Homebrew, on desktop Ultrasurf works reliably and if you are planning a vacation and want to record Netflix shows offline then get the trial version of Nord VPN.
However, it goes without saying that none of these free methods are reliable. The best long term solution is to get a paid VPN like NordVPN or ExpressVPN which apparently works well for Netflix but also quite expensive at the same time (around $ 15 per month). Smart DNS proxy is also another good option.
