From XP or Vista Windows 10: a new mandatory installation

An upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 10 will not be an option. If necessary, users of this operating system, which is still present despite the end of its support by Microsoft, will have to go through a new installation.

This is not a surprise since an upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 was already not possible. The little surprise is to learn that it will be the same for Windows Vista. The jump to Windows 10 will require a new clean install.

This detail – given Windows Vista's market share (2.9%; Net Applications) – was confirmed by Gabriel Aul of Microsoft. In a 2014 end-of-year tweet unearthed by Neowin, whoever takes care of all Windows Insider program returns indicated that full upgrades to Windows 10 will only be possible from Windows 7.

In his various responses, he also recalled that at this point, Microsoft has not announced anything regarding pricing for Windows 10. Furthermore, he specifies that the availability of the next build of Windows 10 (new preview for testers) will be announced on January 21. It will be offered via Windows Update (for already testers) and ISO images will also be published.
