Before the commercial launch of 5G in 2020, manufacturers of mobile components have already entered the race for the supply of 5G chips that will equip the first smartphones and gadgets.
The Qualcomm group was the first to make announcements at the end of 2016 with the X50 modem, followed later by Intel and its series of modems XMM 8000., both of which plan to integrate these solutions into smartphones from 2019.
Other players should come forward and MediaTek has just presented its own 5G NR modem Helio M70 who will have the distinction of enjoying a 7nm engraving EUV (Extreme Ultra Violet) at TMSC.
MediaTek plans to start delivering its modems from 2019, allowing it not to miss the global shift to 5G, and has established technical partnerships with various players.
In terms of performance, MediaTek announces that its Helio M70 modem will be compatible with Release 15 of 3GPP and will support data rates up to 5 Gbps.
