Testing the QNAP TS-670 NAS

In this file, we will present to you the TS-670 NAS from Qnap, a leading player in the world of NAS for professionals and individuals. In a design box analogous to the other models of the brand that we have already tested in our previous files, it is a model with 6 bays which this time caught our attention.

Qnap TS-670: a 6-bay NAS

The TS-670 is presented by Qnap as a device that offers ultra-high performance enabling speeds of up to 450MB / s in reading and up to 432MB / s in writing. To achieve this ambitious goal, Qnap has equipped with 4 Gigabit network connectors, a 2.6 GHz dual-core Intel Celeron processor and 2 GB of DDR3 Ram, in addition to having the QTS4.1 operating system for all Qnap devices.

Present in the range intended for SMEs, Qnap completes its description of this device as a secure, scalable and reliable NAS solution, designed for business applications and rapidly growing data storage needs, capable of supporting up to 38 disks with expansion units add the device for a maximum capacity of around 190 TB gross.

Unpacking the TS-670

While Qnap seems to target its device for the business market, it did not neglect the packaging. Indeed, this one benefits from a white cardboard presentation as neat as for the market of individuals and independent professionals. On the other hand, no carrying handle is provided for this carton which remains all the same impressive.

The QTS4 firmware is enhanced by screenshots presenting this new modified interface enriched with new features and applications.

As always, upon opening the box, we discover a device perfectly protected from all direct shocks thanks to thick rigid foam spacers. Once the spacers have been removed, the NAS is contained in a thick plastic bag used as an overpack to further improve its protection.

A large label placed on the top of the metal cover invites us to connect the address and insert a CloudKey key to quickly use the Qnap myQNAPcloud system which allows you to access your QNAP device anywhere and anytime, remotely, thanks to to the dynamic DNS service offered by the brand.

In the accessories register supplied with the TS670, we find the power cable to connect the internal unit to the device, all the necessary hardware for 35 and 25 disks, 4 network cables to equip each interface, the NAS and a set of keys to lock the drawer locks. There is also a quick start sheet explaining how to mount a disc in a drawer, and how to connect the NAS to its network.

The drawers are identical to those of the TS569 Proque which we had tested, ie largely in metal and with a lock. We appreciate the fact that Qnap does not multiply the different types of drawers, thus allowing possible exchanges with another device in the range when one is equipped with several of its devices.

Note also that no warranty strip is present on the device, which authorizes the user to open it to add DDR3 RAM memory for example, since the device allows it as we will see in the following section. It is a choice of QNAP that we also appreciate, not making the user a prisoner of any warranty limitation.

Features of the TS-670 NAS

The Qnap TS-670 is a very largely metal case built on the same basis as the other models of the brand tested in our previous files. This brushed aluminum appearance, whose color tends to brown, is particularly pleasing to the eye and gives a feeling of solidity and seriousness. The front is in black ABS. From a completely reasonable footprint for a device with 6 storage bays with dimensions of 175 (H) x 257 (W) x 235 (D) mm, it has a 250W power supply integrated in the housing logically bringing a not inconsiderable weight. less than 7 kg.

In addition to its 6 drawers which are strictly identical to those of the TS-569-Pro (see our test), fitted with a lock which characterizes the models of the Qnap professional range, it borrows from it an LCD display with 2 monochrome lines of analogous presentation, with its two command buttons, activity indicator LEDs (network, eSata, disks, USB). But a novelty comes from the presence of an infrared receiver to support a Qnap multimedia remote control (optional). The presence of a USB2 port with a USB-Copy button and the power-on button reinforces this dual destination for professional and personal use.

At the back, there are 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports with Wake-On-Lan (WOL) support, 2 eSATA ports, 2 additional USB3 ports and 2 additional USB2 ports. But then again, there is a new HDMI port, a mini Jack audio output and a micro mini-jack offering multimedia possibilities to which Qnap had not accustomed us on this type of material. Finally, we note the presence of a Reset button, a slot for a Kesington lock, the electrical power connector, the power supply fan and the two very quiet 9 cm fans ensuring the renewal of fresh air in the housing.

Powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron G550 processor running at 2.6 GHz, and having a 2GB memory module of DDR3-10600 RAM in So-Dimm format (Transcend TS256MSK64V3N) expandable up to 16GB, this NAS seems well calibrated for the SOHO or storage market , up to 16 TB (with current hard drives) will be predominant. It should however be noted that access to add a memory module in the free slot next to the processor is not very easy without having to remove the cover more, which is a shame

Once the drawers are removed, you can see the processor heatsink where no fan is present. Indeed, the G550 has a TDP (Thermal Design Power) Max quite reasonable 65W. Consequently, the ventilation provided by the two fans behind the housing is sufficient.

The power supply is provided by the FSP-GROUP reference FSP250-50LC box of 250W maximum, 80 Plus Bronze certified, and which has already largely proven its reliability over time, and its low noise level.

Finally, the reception of 6 disks of 6 TB each carries its gross storage capacity of 36 TB, so it naturally has very good aptitudes for storing data, all the more that it is possible to add, optionally, two extension bays which can contain 12 (REXP-1200U-RP) and 16 bays (REXP-1600U-RP) respectively for a maximum of 38 disks!

What's New in QTS 4.1

Since our last file which was devoted to the Qnap TS-421 in environment QTS-4.0, which was a radical change compared to QTS 3.8, Qnap has continued its improvements with this version called QTS4.1. Thus, it is under this new version that we value our TS-670. The change between QTS-4.0 and QTS-4.1 is not this time an upheaval of interface, but a contribution in new functionalities, a gain in maturity of existing functions and an increased development of mobile applications.

So, since our last test, we have identified 3 new major applications that areSignage Station,Notes StationandVirtualization Station.

Signage Station(digital signage station) is an application that allows restaurant owners, for example, to create menu cards, advertising posters, or company profiles by themselves, and to easily display results on screens to attract more clients !

Notes StationQNAP allows you to create digital notes on your private cloud provided by the Turbo NAS. You can also easily use the wealth of collections of files, photos, music and videos stored on the Turbo NAS to enrich your notes. With Notes Station, your digital memories are securely stored for instant access.

WithVirtualization Station, Qnap offers the possibility of creating several virtual machines on the Turbo NAS and managing them in a centralized way with an easy to use interface allowing companies to save on the purchase of an additional server for example. Unfortunately for us, this module requires that the TS-670 be equipped with at least 4GB of RAM to install and operate, and the model we have is in its basic version with 2GB of RAM. Also we postpone later, in a new folder on another Qnap device, the test of this very promising functionality.

Mobile applications on iOS and Android not only allow you to monitor the brand's NAS, but also to synchronize, share and distribute stored resources.

From now on, Qnap offers no less than 8 applications to achieve this objective, whether for data, music, videos, photos, but also for monitoring the device (Qmanager) or its environment (Vmobile), downloading, and even to have a remote control (Qremote). It is therefore a very complete offer.

The application library has also grown considerably, as it is more than a hundred add-ons, offered by Qnap and its partners, that can be installed with the click of a mouse. To find their way around, Qnap has naturally taken care to group into different categories all of these modules, covering both the needs of individuals and those of businesses, see the world of education.

Other improvements, more discreet, concern the operating system of the NAS. Thus, it is Samba with SMB 2.1 support which now allows the NAS to be domain controller. It should be noted that it was Samba 4 (SMB V3.0) which was initially planned, but which is postponed for a future update. As for FileStation, it has been enriched with intelligent filters for searching files, VLC for playing multimedia contents and sharing links allowing to share files mutually. Likewise, file backup has been enriched with the applicationQnap Netbak Replicatorwhich, as we will see later in this file, allows you to save data from a Windows computer.

The appearance of MyQnapCloud is also noted, making it easier to find your NAS on the Internet.

As for virtualization as a storage medium, the TS-670 now has vSphere Plug-in v1.3 which allows remote creation of a database on a dedicated volume in a more flexible way. Windows 2012 R2 Hyper-V also includes automatic space recovery thanks to Hyper-V granular allocation.

As we can see, no revolution in this new update, but an evolution allowing Qnap's TurboStation, including the TS-670, to ramp up and consolidate the vast functionalities that we had already noted in our previous file.

QNAP Notes Station allows you to create digital notebooks on the private cloud provided by the TS-670. You can easily leverage your own files, photos, music and stock videos on the Turbo NAS to enrich your notes.

Supplied as an application for Turbo NAS, its installation is very simple by clicking onAdd go fromApplication Manager.

After a few moments where we follow on a screen the different stages of installation of the application, Notes Station opens with, for first document, the quick user guide in English in an interface in English Because of the international distribution of its devices, Qnap has of course predicted the location of its application. With a single click in the Notes Station options, the user chooses French from among all the languages ??offered to francize the interface. Finally, in the import options, the Notes Station quick start manual is then automatically offered in French for installation. Again a simple and efficient process from Qnap.

Qnap has designed its Notes Station application to help you take minutes in a business meeting, project or meeting, but also to gather information from the Internet, and use Notes Station to leave comments. It is also possible to insert tasks and work with notifications, to use the calendar to create a plan, simultaneous editing by multiple users of notebooks, with conflict management when several users modify the same document from a notebook which has been previously authorized for pooling.

Note that, unlike what is possible to do in Google Docs for example, there is no interactive view of what another user enters.

Additionally, Notes Station provides an extension for Google Chrome, and can be used to capture text, files, web pages, or images over a network, email, and the Internet. For an image, you can edit it or add comments with Image Editor.

This application is extremely simple and intuitive to use and thus makes it possible to archive and annotate web pages during a search.

To organize and search among all the notes thus produced and collected, a search field is available. Its effectiveness seems formidable and the documents are very quickly found. It is also possible to tag them with key words like what already exists for photos.

Documents can also be attached to supplement a note with musical documents, videos, etc.

The full screen display, for a meeting projection for example, is also planned, as is sharing via an Internet link, Facebook, etc.

Thanks to Notes Station, your digital memories are kept securely on your own infrastructure for instant access in a local or remote network via the Internet, while maintaining maximum confidentiality. It is not just a text editor, but rather an assistant to enriched digital documents finding its usefulness in a wide variety of individual or group digital works.

Signage Stationis an application of the TS-670 which is used in conjunction with the design softwareiArtist Litefrom iNDS. With Signage Station, you can easily create content for a wide range of presentations, such as animated resumes for recruiters, or memories that can be shared on Facebook. Multiple design widgets are available to create menu cards, advertising posters, or company profiles, and to display them immediately on the web and mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.

All content is developed with iArtist lite and easily and quickly transferred to the NAS.

To use it, you must download the iArtistLite software from Signage Station and install it on your workstation. But at the time of installation, only English and Chinese are available to us. Indeed, at the time of writing this file, no multilingual version of the software seems available.

In addition, many services will install on our workstation and run in the background: an Apache server, a PostgreSQL server and a media converter.

Once installed, you are faced with what looks like a software to help website design, the difference almost everything is particularly simple, even if English remains the current language.

The principle is then based on the design from a blank document in which we add images, videos, music, but also files in PDF, PowerPoint, etc.

The composition is made by dragging and dropping these resources into the composition page, with the possibility of managing a timeline to have a document animated over time. Animations such as scrolling text or a clock, for example, are also available to make the document even more lively.

It is also possible to make your compositions from models download online.

Once the composition is done, you can preview it on your workstation then, if the result is satisfactory, download it to our TS-670 which will then publish it immediately. The operation takes only a few seconds. Please note that iArtistLite can support several Qnap TurboNas simultaneously to update them all at once.

This Signage Station application therefore allows the nophyte user in Web development to publish their own resources, classified by themes and different sites as the case may be, in an extremely fast manner, with only the concern of the content in mind, the software taking care of all that is coding of the site itself. The proposed models even allow accracer this type of publication.

We regret nevertheless that it is necessary to weigh down our workstation a little with applications that run in the background, and especially that the software is not translated. Nevertheless, Signage Station is an original idea from Qnap which could find some success with a considerable number of users, and we salute this originality!

TS-670 storage management

With its 6 disk arrays, the TS-670 is clearly intended for data storage, with a theoretical potential of 36 TB with current disks.

The new QTS 4.1 storage dashboard is divided into three main areas: the volume list, the storage pool list, and the disk list.

The volume list displays all logical volumes and their capacities, the storage pool list displays the status and space usage of the storage pools, and the disk list displays the physical hard drives and their associated storage hosts if applicable ( that is, when an extension unit is connected). Thus, a simple click on the logical volume icon allows you to check the read storage pools and the hard disks used by the volume.

Similarly, a click on a volume is enough to know which shared folders it contains, or on a storage pool to know its total capacity and the disks that compose it. Beyond the simplicity of obtaining this information, it is especially the clarity of this which dominates.

If the usefulness of this interface is undeniable in the case of a single disc, it is easy to imagine, in the case where 38 discs are available thanks to the expansion units, that this ease and this clarity of information become essential.

Obviously, all types of RAID are supported by the TS-670 and the creation of a volume is, again, a simple operation which does not present any difficulty, even for the nophyte: the assistant takes care of everything and enchants the steps.

So, to create a RAID5 cluster, we first chose to create a storage pool made up of three identical Seagate ST4000VN000 disks, in order to envisage the extension of this RAID group with one or more disks later.

Then the assistant immediately encapsulates the steps to create a volume on this newly created storage pool.

So, we have to choose the storage pool on which we want to create our new volume, but also if we want to practice thick provisioning (Thick provisioning) in order to immediately and effectively reserve the chosen space, or if we want to do thin provisioning ( Thin provisioning) to save disk space and make dynamic allocation.

We have even been able to over-allocate space. So, while our storage pool only offered a physical size in Raid5 of 7.26TB (3 disks of 4TB), we were able to define a volumeDatavol1of 4TB actually reserved and occupied in thick provisioning (see above), and a volumeDatavol210TB, that is to say more than the remaining space, but also the initial space available, in fine provisioning, with the objective that one day we will add this space when the time is right.

This is called over-allocation of space. The TS-670 warned us of the precarious situation in which we were putting ourselves, but no blockage appeared and the interface of the storage manager reports us correctly the situation, as well in the volume manager, as in the pool manager storage, as evidenced by the screenshots below.

As a safety measure, when defining volumes, the user can define filling alert thresholds expressed in% of disk occupancy in order to receive a notification when this alert threshold is reached. This threshold remains modifiable at any time after the creation of the volume, thus offering flexibility in management over time.

These volume management techniques should undoubtedly delight network administrators, because they respond perfectly to the current problems of data storage, the latter experiencing a meteoric explosion currently.

Qnap shows with this storage manager its perfect mastery and knowledge of its core business, to know the storage of data, while knowing how to put in a simple way, the door of all, the most advanced current techniques.

ISCSI storage in virtualis environment

Given its great storage capacities and the power of its processor, the TS-670 can naturally find its place within a network where virtualization is used.

Certified to operate in a Vmware, Citrix and Microsoft Hyper-V environment, the TS-670 supports the most advanced features in these environments, making it possible to reach transfer speeds of 450MB / s in read mode and 432MB / s in write mode from the manufacturer, in particular thanks to its 4 network interfaces which it is possible to aggregate.

Thus, under Vmware, the TS-670 supports VAAI (vStorage API for Array Integration) to increase the performance of operations in virtualization environments. With VAAI, data processing is offloaded to the Turbo NAS, and standard virtual machine management and deployment operations can be performed faster, using less ESXi CPU resources, memory, and bandwidth.

In addition, Qnap has developed a vSphere Client plugin. With the latter, administrators can easily monitor the status of the Turbo NAS and databases, and create additional databases for multiple ESXi hosts with a few clicks from the vSphere client console.

In a large-scale server virtualization environment, management is centralized and direct. The ability to create a database on a dedicated volume is available to provide more flexibility. The process is then carried out in a single step, since the creation of the volume is done automatically during the creation of a database. The management process is therefore simplified.

In a Microsoft Hyper V environment, the TS-670 supports the transfer of unloaded data (ODX) from Microsoft Windows Server 2012. Thus, the Microsoft server can take care of the task of controlling reads and writes of data on the TS- 670, freeing up as many resources for the server to do other tasks. This benefit is even greater on iSCSI units during copy and move operations for Windows 2012 hosts using this type of storage.

Qnap also offers a management tool called QNAP SMI-S which allows you to manage the Turbo NAS directly via Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 (SCVMM).

To arrive at this operating situation, it is necessary first to make available on the TS-670 iSCSI volumes. The creation of these units is carried out in a few clicks, QNAP remaining faithful, for this operation, its spirit to make things simple and effective.

In the iSCSI section of the storage manager, you trigger the possibility of using an assistant just by clicking on the create button.

Once the target has been defined, it is the configuration of the storage Lun where the choice of Thin Provisioning can be chosen. If so, Qnap provides additional information and warnings about this powerful option.

As with a conventional volume, a occupancy alert threshold is set as a percentage of the total available capacity. A final notch then recalls all of the choices made before implementation.

Once the operations have been carried out, all of our resources are then clearly summarized in the storage manager which we had already appreciated for its clarity in the previous chapter.

With the same simplicity, we were able in a few clicks to change a storage Lun from one target to another. The procedure developed by QNAP is still a model of simplicity and security since we start by deactivating a Lun in its initial target, then we dissociate it, to finally associate its new Target. This is just another example of how easy it is to manipulate data in QTS 4.

We could also have tackled the simplicity with which advanced ACLs can be managed, or the ease of making a backup of Lun in file format (not possible in block format), but space is lacking so it will be for another file.

Virtual disks or iSCSI Client

Qnap is one of the rare manufacturers to have implemented theiSCSI Client((iSCSI Initiator) in its NAS, and this is however a feature that we appreciate Zebulon where we are concerned with the simplicity of computing for the end user.

Indeed, thanks to this functionality, the TS-670 is able to interrogate itself other devices offering iSCSI resources, to mount them to use them as a clean resource and to offer it to its own users. Note that QNAP's competitors also offer it, but most often in the form of an SMB (smbclient) type of assembly, a protocol less efficient than iSCSI and less suitable for consolidating resources. Qnap, for its part, does not seem to offer this type of assembly by SMB.

Thus, in a business environment, a network administrator is able to present users of a network with a single server, the TS-670 in this case, which will be able to serve in a efficient and transparent manner a set of storage resources from different devices, whatever the protocol envisaged.

Again, the 4 network interfaces of the TS-670 will make its task easier, both for performance and for security, since some may be isolated in a VLAN dedicated to iSCSI exchanges. The exposure of the resources of the network to the risks users of the network can then very well be summed up in such a situation to the TS-670 alone.

This is of course just one example of a possible situation. Many other models are possible Even more than from our point of view, the two clients are not opposed, but complement each other according to the operating situation: SMB client for individuals most of the time, and iSCSI for businesses We could all imagine also that an NFS client is available on TurboNAS, because after all, QNAP provides for the creation of a shared folder from an ISO file

The implementation of the client iSCSI is also supported by a QTS 4 assistant, which, in just three clicks, allows us to achieve our goals for mounting a remote resource, and in a few additional clicks to build a shared folder on this new resource.

Note that even if the overview of the storage volume gives a complete view of all the resources of the NAS, it does not display the resources obtained through remote disks The view of these resources is only available in the sectionvirtual disk.

This is understandable, but we would still appreciate an additional view summarizing the set of all the resources (own AND by remote editing) offered by the device. As we can see, the TS-670 has the means to be the central point of access to the resources of a network, and the prospects for making it even more versatile in this area depend only on the evolution of QTS 4. We can bet that QNAP will be able to be attentive this evolution.

With its 6 bays, the TS-670 is perfectly suited for massive data backup since, with current 6 TB disks, it potentially offers a gross capacity of 36 TB. Qnap has equipped its QTS-4.1 system with a call moduleBackup managerwhich offers a wide range of backup functions. Users can use the NAS as a backup server providing space for all types of computers and servers. In addition, users can also back up internal files from the NAS to external, remote or cloud devices.

Thus, in a computer environment with MacOS, the TS-670 can be seen as a TimeMachine backup server. You can then allow the NAS to serve as a destination for a MAC OS Time Machine backup. Les ordinateurs sous Windows, quant eux, bnficient dun programme mis au point par Qnap, baptisQnap NetBak Replicator, pour sauvegarder les fichiers sur une ou plusieurs units de Turbo NAS sur le rseau. Lopration est trs simple et la sauvegarde des donnes peut tre effectue en seulement quelques clics grce aux paramtrages de la synchronisation en temps rel des sauvegardes programmes et des sauvegardes automatiques.

L encore, la mise en uvre est dune extrme simplicit, car aprs la dtection par le programme de lunit TS-670 prsente sur le rseau et les paramtres didentifications garantissant la scurit daccs lappareil, lutilisateur se voit alors proposer deux modes de fonctionnement du logiciel : un mode simple et un mode avanc o, suivant le choix de lutilisateur, linterface est rduite lessentiel ou permet de slectionner avec prcision les donnes sauvegarder et le mode de fonctionnement du logiciel. Par exemple, la sauvegarde peut tre faite la demande, ou plus avantageusement pour les tourdis, programme de manire systmatique et rcurrente.

Pour des ordinateurs sous Linux ou des serveurs, le protocole Rsync pourra tre utilis avec avantage, dautant plus que Qnap propose une certaine souplesse dans son usage en autorisant lutilisateur paramtrer le port local dcoute, ainsi que le taux de transfert maximum en rception.

La souplesse offerte va mme jusquau choix dun nom dutilisateur et mot de passe utiliser, pour garantir l encore une certaine scurit.

Pour complter ces dispositifs de mise en scurit des donnes, le TS-670 est galement capable de rpliquer ses propres donnes vers un autre TurboNas de Qnap, vers un serveur Rsync, des units externes branches sur ses ports USB, et mme dans le cloud de manire native vers Amazon S3, Elephant Drive ou Symform, ou laide de modules complmentaires vers dautres prestataires (Google Drive, Dropbox, Ms-Azure, etc.).

Mais l o Qnap est encore plus fort, cest avec son systme RTRR (pour Real Time Remote Replication) qui permet la fois de maintenir en temps rel distance des dossiers synchroniss entre deux TurboNas, mais en particulier son option qui permet au TS-670 daller rcuprer lui-mme les donnes en FTP/FTPS sur un serveur distant ou dy dposer ses propres donnes.Comme le TS-670 permet galement le montage de dossier virtuel distant, il est aussi envisageable dutiliser cette fonctionnalit pour certains autres protocoles

Il serait bien trop long de dtailler ici tout ce que ce module de sauvegarde de QTS-4.1 permet, mais ce quil en ressort, cest une particulire souplesse de mise en uvre, et surtout une importante attention porte la sauvegarde des donnes des utilisateurs. Les usagers consciencieux peuvent ainsi tre certains davoir les moyens de mettre en scurit leurs donnes contre tout dsastre numrique.

Avec 4 interfaces rseau, les possibilits dinterconnexion sont multiples, et par consquent les situations de tests multiples le sont galement. Nous allons vous prsenter quelques-unes de celles que nous avons imagin pour reprsenter diffrentes situations dexploitation en conditions relles.

Lensemble des graphiques ci-dessous est celui fourni par le moniteur de ressources de linterface QTS du TS-670.

Pour exploiter au mieux lensemble des interfaces du TS-670, nous avons branch chacune de ses interfaces sur des switchs et des rseaux diffrents. Lensemble des commutateurs employs sont tous gigabits, administrables de niveau 2 minimum parmi lesquels leD-Link DGS-1210-24 test lan pass, et dont vous pouvez consulter le dossier sur notre site. Notre fichier de test propose une taille de 13 Go.

Nous avons constitu une unit RAID5 avec 3 disques Seagate NASWorks ST4000VN000 5900 trs/min (pour reprsenter un usage professionnel ), et trois volumes indpendants constitus dun disque chacun avec deux Seagate Constellation CS de 3To (rf. ST3000NC000) 7200trs/min (pour des performances maximales base dun seul disque) et dun Seagate Green de 2To (rf. ST2000DL003) 5900trs/min (pour un usage conomique / familial ).

Tout dabord, aussi bien en lecture partir du volume en RAID5 quen criture sur ce mme volume, partir dun seul client quip dun disque SSD, nous obtenons un trs bon 117,7 Mb/s.

Le mme test sur un seul disque Seagate Constellation CS de 3To (rf. ST3000NC000) 7200trs/min nous permet dobtenir presque 110MB/s de moyenne en lecture et 117,7Mb/s en criture, comme en RAID5.

Le mme test sur le disque Seagate Green 5900trs/min nous amne une valeur identique en criture, mais lgrement infrieure et moins rgulire en lecture que pour le disque 7200trs/min.

Mme si, comme on pouvait sen douter, la situation la plus favorable et rgulire dans les dbits est celle o lon a des disques en RAID5, notre TS-670 assure dexcellentes performances en criture notamment, avoisinant la limite thorique des 125MB/s quoffre une interface Gigabit, et donne galement de trs bonnes performances en lecture, quel que soit le type de disque utilis, en gnral au-dessus de biens dautres NAS que nous avons pu tester (se rfrer pour cela ce test ralis systmatiquement dans nos prcdents dossiers).

Le moniteur de ressources affichant une occupation moyenne de 37% environ.

Pour la suite, nous avons alors procd la lecture de 4 copies distinctes rparties sur 4 pools de stockages diffrents (3 volumes simples et un volume RAID5) sur les 4 interfaces rseau partir de 6 clients.

Pour la lecture, nous avons obtenu des rsultats globalement bons, car nous avons pu cumuler 380MB/s environ pour un taux doccupation processeur de lordre de 70%.

On regrette que le gestionnaire des ressources ne propose pas une courbe cumulative des transferts sur les interfaces rseau

En revanche, pour lcriture sur le TS-670, les difficults commencent se faire sentir mme si les rsultats sont plus quhonorables. En effet, on obtient un taux doccupation processeur de 100%.

Nous avons un dbit cumul de 346 Mb/s environ, ce qui est nanmoins pas mal du tout, car les appareils avec lesquels nous avons obtenu des dbits suprieurs taient quips dun processeur plus puissant.

On remarquera dailleurs que le dbit augmente de nouveau sur les autres interfaces quand le transfert sur une est termin. Le Celeron G550 donne donc le maximum de ce quil peutet le fait plutt bien, car au demeurant, grce ses 4 interfaces rseau, il dpasse les dbits que nous avions obtenus sur le TS-879Pro que nous avions test, disposant dun processeur beaucoup plus puissant, mais seulement de deux interfaces rseau Il est probable que muni de 4 interfaces, le TS-879Pro le dpasserait.

De manire anecdotique, nous regrettons que linterface QTS ne propose toujours pas une courbe cumulative des dbits instantans des 4 interfaces, car, mme si nous avons pu au prix dacrobaties, faire afficher lensemble des tiquettes la lecture, cela nous a t impossible lcriture sur le NAS.

A noter que lors de nos diffrents tests, le bruit mis par les ventilateurs qui se sont mis tourner un peu plus vite ntait qu peine plus perceptible. Lappareil est donc rest parfaitement silencieux, dautant plus que nos disques Seagate ne gnrent quasiment pas de nuisance sonore.

Consommation lectrique du TS-670

Comme toujours pour chacun de nos tests, nous valuons la consommation lectrique de notre appareil.

quip dun processeur Intel Celeron G550 2,6 GHz dont le TDP (Thermal Design Power) Max est de 65W, aucun ventilateur nest prsent sur le radiateur du processeur. Ainsi, la gnration de nuisances sonores par le botier nest occasionne que par les deux ventilateurs arrire de 9cm et celui du bloc dalimentation FSP-250 de 250W. Chacun de ces ventilateurs est particulirement silencieux et aprs la squence dinitialisation au dmarrage, cest peine si on les entend, y compris lors de fortes sollicitations de lappareil pour augmenter le dbit dair frais dans le botier.Sajoute par la suite le bruit gnr par les 6 disques durs qui lquipent. Lors de ce test, nous avons pu quiper notre appareil avec 6 disques Seagate :

  • 1 disque Seagate Green de 2To (rf. ST2000DL003) 5900trs/min
  • 3 disques Seagate NASWorks ST4000VN000 5900 trs/min
  • 2 disques Seagate Constellation CS de 3To (rf. ST3000NC000) 7200trs/min

Pour la consommation lectrique, le constructeur donne les valeurs suivantes pour son appareil quip de 6 disques de 2To :

  • 24,6W en veille
  • 48,7W en fonctionnement
  • 1 W teint, mais avec le mode WOL actif

Les relevs que nous avons pu effectuer avec notre configuration de 6 disques sont sensiblement diffrents puisque les consommations lectriques que nous obtenons pour notre Qnap TS-670 sont :

  • appareil teint, mais raccord au secteur : 2,5W
  • mise sous tension : un pic jusqu 130W avec 6 disques
  • entre 66W et 70W lors du fonctionnement, avec 6 disques
  • enfin en hibernation des 6 disques durs : 48W

Toutes ces mesures ont t effectues avec lafficheur digital teint, celui-ci se mettant automatiquement dans ce mode au bout de quelques instants (non paramtrable), mme si sa consommation est quasi anodine.

Une nouvelle fois, force est de constater que Qnap est nouveau trop optimiste sur les valeurs quil annonce pour son appareil, mme si nous remarquons que des progrs ont t accomplis, notamment au niveau de la consommation appareil teint, en comparaison ce que nous avions relev dans nos prcdents dossiers consacrs dautres appareils de la marque, avec une consommation somme toute raisonnable.

Comme pour les autres appareils de la marque, le TS-670 supporte le WOL (Wake On Lan) sur chacune de ses interfaces, sans discernement possible des ports dans lactivation. Rappelons que cette fonctionnalit permet de maintenir lappareil teint par souci dconomie dnergie, et de lallumer distance par lenvoi dune squence de type magic packet contenant ladresse MAC de linterface rseau solliciter, pour que celle-ci, en rceptionnant ce paquet, ordonne lappareil de sortir de son mode de veille profonde.

Pour le cas o le TS-670 naurait pas vocation rester allum en permanence, il est possible de programmer un calendrier hebdomadaire.

A noter quau cas o une tche de rplication serait en cours par exemple, le NAS est alors capable de la dtecter et dattendre lachvement de celle-ci avant de steindre.

En cas de coupure lectrique, le TS-670 est capable de communiquer avec un onduleur qui lui notifierait cette information par son port USB ou par rseau. En effet, le TS-670 sait reconnatre un onduleur qui serait reli un de ses ports USB, parmi une importante quantit de modles et de constructeurs diffrents.

Il est galement en mesure dtre notifi par le biais dun serveur dUPS rseau de ltat actuel de lalimentation lectrique et dagir en consquence lorsquune dfaillance est dtecte.Il peut lui-mme servir de serveur UPS pour communiquer cette information dautres appareils rseau.

Le TS-670 prsente donc une relative sobrit lectrique, des fonctionnalits avances trs compltes en termes de gestion de lnergie et une nuisance sonore particulirement faible.

Notre avis sur le NAS QNAP TS-670

Arriv au terme de ce dossier, vous laurez devin, nous sommes enchants par les qualits de cet appareil qui remplit parfaitement les fonctions auxquelles il se destine. Nous navons pu faire un tour complet et exhaustif de toutes les possibilits offertes par cet appareil tant elles sont nombreuses.

Dune apparence toujours aussi satisfaisante, dans un botier de conception robuste et prouv, avec un afficheur digital pour informer sur ses diffrents tats, le TS-670 offre des capacits de stockage suffisantes pour la plupart des situations communes en entreprises ou chez le particulier exigeant, grce sa capacit daccueil de 6 disques et de son gestionnaire de stockage que nous avons vu particulirement efficace.La puissance raisonnable de son processeur, et surtout ses 4 interfaces rseaux lui permettent de sadapter avec souplesse dans tous les environnements rseaux, y compris les plus complexes. Ce nombre important dinterfaces nous a mme permis dobtenir les meilleures performances parmi tous les NAS QNAP que nous ayons tests, y compris leTS-879 Proqui ne bnficie que de deux interfaces rseau, mais dun processeur plus puissant.

Seuls devraient lui faire peur les environnements avec une trs forte sollicitation rseau permanente, le processeur pouvant, comme on la vu, montrer quelques limites, auquel cas on lui prfrera probablement ses grands frres disposant dun processeur plus puissant. Quoi quil en soit, sa polyvalence en fait un appareil trs prcieux dans toute infrastructure rseau, en allant mme jusqu tre le point dentre fdrateur des ressources de stockages dune entreprise grce sa capacit dtre client iSCSI.



Ses possibilits dvolution dans le temps par lajout de RAM supplmentaire, de baies dextensions pour davantage de disques, ainsi que ses nombreuses connectiques, assurent que lachat du TS-670 est un investissement rentable. Ceci est dautant plus vrai que Qnap maintient dans le temps une volution du firmware de ses appareils pendant de nombreuses annes, garantissant l aussi le bnfice de fonctionnalits toujours amliores (voir notreinterview de Florent Verthuy de Qnap ce sujet). Notes Station et Signage Station que nous vous avons prsent dans ce dossier, sont un exemple de ces fonctionnalits et de loriginalit dont Qnap est capable de faire preuve dans ce domaine.

Cest donc sans contestation possible que tout type dutilisateur pourra lui confier de manire durable et en toute scurit ses donnes, sappuyer sur ses capacits pour traiter du multimdia et le stockage en environnement Vmware Vsphere, Microsoft Hyper-V et Citrix Xen, mais galement laborer des processus de sauvegardes efficaces suivant de nombreux protocoles, que ce soit en tant que destinataire de ces sauvegardes ou en metteur de donnes sauvegarder. Le service RTRR de Qnap est un outil puissant qui permet au TS-670 daspirer les donnes dun autre serveur qui nest pas ncessairement dailleurs un QNAP. Cest ce qui en fait cette force et peu de concurrents de QNAP sont aujourdhui capables de proposer la mme chose.

En revanche, nous regrettons de navoir pu tester le module de virtualisation par manque de mmoire sur cet appareil. En effet, les 2Go installs dorigine ne sont pas suffisants, et cest un minimum de 4 Go qui sont ncessaires pour envisager de mettre en uvre ce module rvolutionnaire sur ce type dappareil. Bien videmment, nous nen resterons pas l, et nous testerons cette fonctionnalit lors du test dun prochain appareil Qnap en capacit de supporter ce module, car, nos yeux, cette fonctionnalit offre de trs nombreuses possibilits supplmentaires lappareil, comme nous avions pu le constater dans notre dossier consacr auVe-hotec VHS 4 VX TV(qui ne se destine pas tout fait au mme usage que le TS-670) que nous avions test dans un dossier prcdent et que nous vous invitons relire. Le professionnalisme du TS-670 semblerait alors gagner un chelon la lecture de ce que nous annonce Qnap avec ce module de virtualisation

Enfin, avec sa consommation lectrique trs raisonnable et son silence quasi exemplaire, il devrait ravir lensemble des utilisateurs.

Vendu aux alentours de 1000 1100 euros TTC (sans les disques) au moment de la rdaction de ce dossier, le Qnap TS-670 est assez bien plac pour un NAS 6 baies au regard des services quil apporte et des performances quil procure. Nous le recommandons sans hsiter lachat, et pourquoi pas, dot de RAM supplmentaire pour bnficier de lensemble des capacits quil peut offrir et dbrider son potentiel. Il pourrait alors devenir un des NAS les plus polyvalents que nous ayons eus entre les mains. Quoi quil en soit, cest dj une russite.
