Synology DS1815 + NAS review

For this new NAS test, we are returning to the Synology brand with an 8-bay mid-range model: the DS1815 +. Capable of natively hosting up to 48TB of data with current 6TB disks (in 35 or 25 format) with SATA II or III interface, and SSD or mechanical technology. Let's discover the beast together through a large file!

A quality 8-bay NAS

With 8 bays and this versatility of disk formats, all the different RAID modes are supported: alongside the usual RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, we will find the House Raid mode called SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid) which allows to optimize disk space while retaining redundancy when using heterogeneous capacity disks.

The DS1815 + is equipped with an Intel Atom C2538 quad core 2.4 GHz processor, supplemented by 2 GB of expandable 6 GB Ram and 4 Gigabit network interfaces capable of supporting link aggregation. Endowed with the famous DSM operating system, which has been further enriched since our last test devoted to Synology RS3614xs, this device has all the characteristics of power and versatility for its use in different types of networks existing in business or at home. Let us see without further delay what is in fact.

Unpacking the DS1815 +

As usual for its devices intended for businesses and experienced users, Synology has provided for the DS1815 + a very sober packaging, but still very effective in protecting the material during transport. Consisting of a very thick brown cardboard box fitted with a solid carrying handle, there is, as usual, a label in English listing the name of the model and its main material characteristics.

The DS1815 + package

A second label lists the 4 MAC addresses of the network interfaces.

As is often the case at Synology, the box containing the accessories is perfectly integrated into the device's protection device during its transport in order to preserve the cardboard as much as possible from puncturing impacts.

DS1815 + packaging protections

DS1815 + packaging protections

The NAS itself is therefore as secure as possible for transport, with large blocks of very dense foam and overwrapped with a thick protective plastic.

With all the protections vacated and the accessories released, the DS1815 + turns out to be a very similar device

to DS1812 + that we already had test

in May 2012. Nevertheless, it is an aesthetic reworked, especially at the level of the drawers, and which had already emerged with its successor the DS1813 + appeared very quickly but which we had not had the pleasure of testing.

The inventory of our unpacking gives us:

  • the DS1815 + NAS itself
  • a welcome notice
  • 1 pack of screws for disc 25
  • the internal power cord
  • 2 RJ-45 cables of category 5E
  • 2 free IP surveillance camera licenses included by default

The screws for disc 35 are not present because each drawer is provided with a system of quick clip-on sticks to install and fix discs without tools.

DS1815 + drawer

Thus, once the disc has been put in place in the drawer, it suffices to push these tabs into their location for which they fix the disc in the drawer, the plastic pins coming to be placed in the screw holes of the hard disc.

It will be noted that, contrary to what we regretted on the RS3614xs test, the locations of the disk bays are here numbered on the chssismais in very small! No CD is provided to install the device, it will therefore be imperative to have an Internet connection for installation firmware. Let us see in more detail the technical characteristics of this device in the following chapter.

DS1815 + features and interior

As we have already mentioned, the aesthetics of the DS1815 + is very close to that of the 1812+ that we had already tested, except that the plastic which constitutes the whole case appears to us even more matte than the color of its predecessor. On the other hand, its measurements are identical, namely 157x340x233 mm for a weight of 5.3 Kg. The differences between the DS1815 + and its year are located on the front which includes 4 LEDs for the network ports of the DS1815 + against 2 for the DS1812 + Finally, we notice that the shape of the drawers changes slightly, with oblique edges. Note that no USB port is available on the front on this type of model.

Synology DS1815 + in detail

Synology DS1815 + in detail

It is in this case that the change is most obvious. In addition to the 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports previously present on the DS1815 +, there are only 4 USB3 ports, compared to 4 USB2 ports and 2 USB3 ports previously. On the other hand, the two eSata ports, the Reset button, the Kensington type lock, the socket for the power supply and the two large silent fans 120x120mm are still present, which ensure a remarkable ventilation inside the case.

The interior of the case houses the power supply unit thus saving space on the ground, the electronic card with its 8 SATA II / III connectors, and of course the motherboard of the device.

Synology DS1815 + interior

Synology DS1815 + interior

The latter is mainly equipped with an Intel Atom C2538 Dual Core 2.4 GHz clock CPU equipped with an AES-NI encryption engine and a floating point calculation unit and 2 GB of DDR3 RAM (expandable up to 6 GB). Note that the processor does not have a fan, thus reducing noise pollution. Add these characteristics, already more than correct, 4 USB3 ports and 2 eSATA ports, but above all 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports capable of supporting each WOL (Wake On Lan) and Link Aggregation. Potentially, it is possible, with compatible WiFi USB hardware, to add new network interfaces in addition to wired connections.

Each drawer has a single activity LED that flickers depending on the disk activity. The opening mechanism is implemented by light pressure at the bottom of the handle. We note again the presence of these small rubbers which makes it possible to dampen the vibrations at the level of the attachment to the discs.

You should know that optionally, this content can be supplemented by:

  • a remote control
  • additional licenses for surveillance cameras
  • a 4 GB DDR3 RAM module
  • two expansion units: DX213
  • two expansion units: DX513
  • VS240HD monitoring units

Thus, it is possible to expand up to a total of 18 hard disks using 2 DX513 (each 5 disks) the total capacity of the DS1815 + to reach a maximum of 108 TB with current 6 TB disks. Suffice to say that the DS1815 + is able to meet vast needs.

Add that it is certified for virtualization under VMware, Citrix and Microsoft Hyper-V, which confirms its professional NAS profile. Synology has also included the DS1815 + in the support models through its High Availability Cluster application, which makes it enter the world of redundancy and high availability (association of two DS1815 +) and which will obviously attract the attention of companies more demanding in terms of continued service in the event of a breakdown.

The DS1815 + is therefore able to meet the needs of individuals, but also professionals and very demanding companies.

DSM 5.2: a new evolution of the NAS operating system

Since our last file devoted to Synology under DSM 5.0, which was a radical change compared to previous versions DSM-4.X, the operating system of NAS has evolved during its passage to DSM-5.1, then DSM-5.2 today.

This change between DSM-5.0 and DSM-5.2 does not represent this time an upheaval of interface, but a contribution in new functionalities and a gain in maturity of existing functions.

Thus, since our last test, we have noted among the new features: a strengthening of security considerations in particular with the Security Advisor (Security Advisor), an improvement in productivity with Note Station, the increase in network services with the Proxy Server, routing static and multiple gateways, the additional features of FileStation and finally the SSD hidden on a single disk. We could also point out NFS Full File Clone or NFS Reserve Space which optimizes the speed and the efficiency of the storage of virtual machines, but also multimedia novelties. (ALB) and link switching without investing in a server switch. The Cloud part is not to be outdone. Indeed, the user can synchronize data with other public clouds, including OneDrive, Box and HubiC, but also Microsoft Azure, SFR or Hicloud. Glacier Backup's new Explore feature even lets you browse Amazon Glacier and recover files from it individually. In addition, Cloud Station can perform backups and synchronizations between different Diskstation Synology according to different criteria such as file type.

Finally, new possibilities are offered by the latest DSM-5.2 version, namely the expansion of a server for single SSO identification, and the appearance of light virtualization by Docker software containers, to ensure the deployment of a greater number of applications created by developers of the worldwide from Docker Hub, the popular application repository for Docker.

We will unfortunately not have the place to discuss everything in the rest of this file and only some of the previous points will be covered.

Just as DSM-5.2 is an evolution of DSM-5.0, its installation differs little from that which we described to you in our folder on the RS3614xs (which you can read again if necessary to have the detailed procedure).

To carry out this installation, we used our excellent Deskstar NAS disk of 6TB from HGST, the merits of which we had mentioned in previous files.

Thus, a first screen displays the detected device and prompts you to install the latest version of DSM available online. The procedure is carried out according to the steps already described in our previous Synology file, and whose completion is less than 10 minutes (excluding download): very little information is necessary to provide to the installation program so that the procedure, almost completely automatic, is completed without the slightest problem. Thus, you are asked for the desired name for the device, the administrative user name and a password, but also if you want to activate the automatic DSM update and configure / use a Synology Quickconnect account, and finally send anonymous Synology information from For statistical purposes. When opening the interface for the first time, 3 essential points of the interface (Main Menu button, Package Center, and Control Panel) are highlighted by the first connection wizard and DSM help.

Then, by default, DSM help is directly accessible from the desktop, systematically open each connection, until the user decides otherwise. It is therefore a constant support for the beginner user.

Note that from now on, the control panel offers two display modes depending on the level of the user: Basic or Advanced.

In order for the device to be fully functional, the step of creating volumes remains according to a type chosen by the user (Single, Raid, etc.).

Healthy volume

Healthy volume

In the single disk installation configuration with which we start this file, the choice is quickly made: it will be Synology SHR format by default.

Synology itself also offers a simple procedure and interface, making it easier for first-time users to get started while allowing more experienced users to switch immediately to all the functionalities.

Now let's go into detail on some of these features.

New network services: Proxy and SSO

Synology has already offered for many years very numerous network services with its DSM system, making them evolve towards the most stable and secure versions of these services.

So, as always, there are CIFS / SMB services for Windows environments, but enriched up to the SMB3 version, with many additional options, such as those ordering the files alphabetically before sending them to the client, or allowing to deactivate multiple connections from the same IP address.

SMP / CIFS protocol

Different options on the SMP / CIFS protocol

NFS is already supported until version V4 of this protocol and the AFP protocol has benefited from improvements for Mac OS environments. Always in commonly supported protocols, FTP has been enriched with encryption services with FTP support SSL / TLS, the module FIPS encryption, support for SFTP, etc. In general, all the usual protocols and services have improved. Rest assured, just re-read our old files to realize that Synology has not forgotten any of the great classics of network services, HTTP, HTTPS, Webdav, Tftp, etc. Recall that additional modules had already appeared in recent years bringing the Radius, Ldap, VPN features

But new modules, more unusual on this type of material, are now present, thus enriching the range of services rendered by DSM.

Let's start for example with the packageProxy Server.Low on the famous software under LinuxSquid, this package allows very simply to offer a common Internet cache to all customers of the local network in order to optimize the requests to save bandwidth, but also for filtering purposes. Very simple to implement, including by private individuals Introduced to the principles of a proxy server, the application is installed very quickly from the Package Center. It only remains to indicate the mode of operation of this Proxy, as for example if the cache must be activated, as well as the authentication which refers to the user accounts of the NAS.

Just by playing on these two parameters, it is possible to significantly improve the quality of the bandwidth through caching, while allowing only certain access to the Internet. More advanced rules can be implemented thanks to the access control section since it is possible to regulate these accesses according to source or destination IPs, or even specific host names.

Proxy Server package access

Access control management in the Proxy Server package

This Proxy module is still young, as it does not indicate any performance of the cache efficiency, and does not integrate the additional functionalities ofSquidGuard, for example to offer individuals filtering of the parental control type for the safety of children, or restriction of sites in business to improve productivity. A module of this type filtering by white list or by black list would surely provide many services for all types of user / administrator! Synology having shown in the past its capacity to take into account the comments of its users and those of our files, we are confident as to the next appearance of such features.

More intended for the professional world, the packageSSO Serverallows to offer a unique identification architecture to integrate all Web applications. All you need to do is add SSO server client scripts to the original login page of all your web applications. When users log into any of your web applications using their username / password, they do not need to re-enter their credentials to access other web applications.

SSO Server Configuration

Configuration of the SSO Server module

Implementation requires more in-depth knowledge, and a specific guide of a few pages is available for download on the Synology website (Synology SSO Server Development Guide).

These are just a few examples of the new features. As we can see, Synology does not just bring life to life, but continues to improve and innovate in the area of ??network services provided by its NAS.

Synchronization of the NAS with the public cloud

Cloud storage, that is to say online storage on the Internet, has become a staple today, in part thanks (or cause?) To our mobile devices that accompany us on a daily basis, on social networks, at work (and in particular collaborative work), but also with the aim of efficiently backing up data. Synology responds to this problem with two approaches to cloud storage: public and private.

With Cloud Sync, Synology offers to synchronize specific folders of the DS1815 + and different cloud platforms such as Google Drive, Dropbox, etc. In our previous folder on the RS3614xs, we regretted the low number of supported platforms and in particular the absence of Hubic or a fully configurable account. We have to believe that Synology heard us there too, because not only is Hubic now available for CloudSync, but no less than 10 platforms in total are already supported. The fully configurable Webdav support is even now available! If we take the case of Hubic for example, the implementation is very simple since it is carried out in a few steps. Once the Hubic option has been selected in CloudSync, you enter its Hubic identifiers, then the synchronization mode as well as the synchronization folder.

On Hubic, we note the presence of a Synology Cloud Sync module in the applications of the associated account.

Synology Cloud Sync

Synology Cloud Sync App Appears in Apps in Hubic

All the operations that this application is authorized to perform is detailed by Hubic in the sectionAccessThe synchronization setting can be adjusted more finely if desired. Once the link is created between the NAS and the account in the cloud, the user can define a scan frequency (in seconds) for synchronization, as well as the maximum loading and downloading speeds so as not to saturate the bandwidth of the link. internet, and it is even possible to specify a filtering based on file types.

Flexibility is therefore there to meet in a rational way the expectations of this type of service. Let us now see the second approach: the private cloud by Synology.

Private Cloud with Cloud Station

With Cloud Station, Synology offers you to be your own cloud for all your devices since it is a question of easily synchronizing your files between your Synology products, your computers and your mobile devices, in the manner of a personal Cloud Box, but with enhanced functionalities. lies in the presence of a Synology device as a Cloud Station server, on which other devices that will synchronize with the NAS will connect as clients.

Home Cloud Station

home screen giving direct access to the different customer modules

In our case, each of the clients that will be synchronized with theCloud stationinstalled on the DS1815 + will have to download an application available as well for computers under Windows, Mac OS or Linux (Ubuntu and Fedora), as for mobile devices under iOS and Android, or for other Synology which will use the packageCloud Station Client. It is therefore a comprehensive solution to keep synchronized all the types of devices that users can have in their possession! As in the case of the Public Cloud in the previous chapter, Synology has once again enriched this personal cloud system since our passage in 2013 review. For example, the setting under Android now allows synchronization with a folder stored on the SD card of the mobile device. Likewise, it is now possible to manage the history of versions in a finer way in order to cancel, for example, an unfortunate erasure.

The client installation under Windows can be done either from the Synology website, or more simply directly from the NAS interface. installation, it needs only a little information: it suffices to specify the address of the NAS (IP, FQDN or QuickConnect) as well as its account identifiers, and the folders that you want to synchronize.

As always, Synology offers the possibility of subsequently fine-tuning the synchronization and operating parameters with great latitude left to the user. A mini tutorial on operation is even provided.

In practice, we have placed text and media documents on our PC in the synchronization folder. These were then found in the corresponding files on the DS1815 + and also became available on our Android tablet. Changes made to a text document on the tablet were also reflected in the document when it reopened on the PC. Flawless operation!

History Cloud Station

Change Log in CloudStation

Each modification and intervention is recorded in the Cloud Station log and allows, if necessary, to go back on an unfortunate modification or erasure. With this function, the DS1815 + truly becomes the central point in the unification of communication between the different devices of the same user, but it also proves to be perfectly suited to the sharing of documents of a working group for which these must be quickly shared. But we will see in the next chapter that Synology goes even further in the field of Cloud regarding documents enriched by offering a new application called Note Station.

The Notes Station app

The all new packageNote Stationhelps you take full advantage of writing, viewing, managing and sharing notes rich in content, that is to say including the addition of rich text, media integration, attachments, etc. Notes thus created can be managed using tags and organizing them intoNotebooks. A version history of all your notes is automatically saved, making it very handy for viewing and restoring previous versions.

Notes Station interface

Note Station to record, manage and share notes

ButNote Stationis not only useful for personal use. Whenever you want, Note Station allows sharing of your content via social media platforms quickly and easily. In addition, other DSM users can collaborate with you in editing a shared note.

Sharing Notes

Many possibilities for sharing Notes

An extension for the Google Chrome Internet browser, calledSynology Web Clipper, takes care of easily copying and requesting the visited links in the form of notes which can be classified directly for later use.

Web Clipper

Web Clipper

If the idea in itself is good, the implementation is on the other hand more delicate, and we have known some disappointments depending on the capture mode chosen, or some screenshots did not work as expected.

But for the Zebulon.fr site, the results were rather satisfactory in the modes offered by this application for Google Chrome.

Web Clipper Options

Synology Web Clipper capture options

Tested in version 1.0.25, this application is still young and there is therefore nothing surprising that some bugs still exist. We bet that by the time you read these lines, Synology's responsiveness will have worked and these few worries will have disappeared.

Finally, Note Station is also available via the appDS Noteon Android and iOS, thus facilitating their consultation and realization from your mobile devices.

DS Note

Document in which we have included a screen copy of the Android tablet using DS Note

Thus, the application worked perfectly with our tablet and our phone, both on Android. The photos of the tablet could even be integrated directly into our test document, and without any bug! It is possible to attach any type of document to the created notes, whether these are videos, voices or in the form of photos.

A summary task manager is also included and each note can be assigned tasks themselves attached to an agenda to ensure that they are processed within the deadlines that you have set.

WithNote Station, your digital notes are securely stored on your own infrastructure for instant access to a local network or remotely over the Internet. This application of enriched digital documents will find an additional dimension in a wide variety of digital works, both for individual use and in collaborative group work, offering new horizons for the use of the DS1815 +.

DS1815 + security

Data security has always been one of Synology's major concerns. As its DSM system has evolved, Synology has strengthened security devices and simplified their implementation thanks to a package calledSecurity Advisor.

This Security Advisor is an assistant to help owners of NAS Synology protect their device from intrusion according to one of the 2 predefined profiles: home use and professional use.

Synology Security Center

Security Center initial screen

The first time you open theSecurity Advisor, you will be asked for which environment you use your Synology NAS. ChooseHouseorJobdepending on your situation and click OK. You can always change this setting later on the pageForwardfrom the menu ofAdviser, but this assistance panel will not reopen thereafter. However, you will be able to define a personalized profile according to your decisions.

A double click on each component of the result gives details of the tests performed and a possible recommendation for improvement.

The personalization part of the analysis makes it possible to be freed from certain detections which could prove useless due to deliberate choices of the administrator.

Personalization of the security advisor

Personalization of the analysis in the security advisor

The analysis options left to the administrator's discretion are very wide, but grouped by categories to facilitate the targeting that we wish to carry out. Five different categories are offered: Malware, Network, Parameters, Update, Account. Each contains different options that can be activated individually. The meticulous administrator can therefore finely adjust his security system if he wishes.

To act on security, it is mainly in the DSM configuration panel that interventions will be performed, especially in the menuSecuritywhich gives access to DSM's integrated firewall, automatic blocking of IPs detected as attackers and the fight against request forgery. An option to combat service denials can also be activated.

Synology thus offers its NAS and its users numerous means of alerting, defending and securing the device to protect it from external attacks, by facilitating the task of the administrator, in particular thanks to the inventory carried out by this device.Security Advisor.

Virtualization with Docker

Dockeris a tool that canpackage an application and its dependencies in a virtual containerwhich can be run on any Linux server, especially here on the DS1815 +. Docker is therefore extending the portability of running an application, whether on a local machine, a private or public cloud, etc.

Docker VS Virtualization

Docker versus Virtualization with hypervisor

A Docker container, unlike traditional virtual machines (VMware, KVM, Xen, etc.), does not require any separate operating system and does not provide any. Rather, it relies on kernel functionality and uses resource isolation (CPU, memory, I / O, network connections, etc.) from the Linux kernel it is running on, that is DSM-5.2 in this case.

By integrating the Docker package into DSM, Synology offers its compatible device models (of which DS1815 + is a part) the vast library of existing applications in this type of container such as, for example, those available in Docker Hub that Synology has included as default image repository. to help you get started.

Docker Search

Docker Image Search from Registry

In the Registry tab, you can import other repositories from Docker communities. Once the image is loaded, you just have to launch it using the wizard provided by Synology.

Docker container creation

An assistant can be launched to help create the container

He accompanies you throughout the creation of your container. During the different steps, you will need to name the container, manually designate the communication ports or let the system assign them automatically.

Once the container is executed, you access console mode by clicking on the tabTerminal.

This Docker package is still young in DSM (version 1.6.2-0033 at the time of this test), because you have to be very good at getting started with Docker to achieve its goals, the wizard and built-in helper not giving much information on the operation containers. Some ergonomic points are also being reviewed, such as removing a duplicate image download that is not possible. In the case below, the download remains on top of hopelessly 0 with no possibility of deletion!

deletion "width =" 300 "height =" 129 "srcset =" https://www.zebulon.fr/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/docker_suppression_f-300x129.jpg 300w, https: //www.zebulon. fr / wp-content / uploads / 2015/10 / docker_suppression_f-768x330.jpg 768w, https://www.zebulon.fr/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/docker_suppression_f-585x251.jpg 585w, https: // www.zebulon.fr/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/docker_suppression_f.jpg 989w "data-lazy-sizes =" (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px "src =" https: //www.zebulon. en / wp-content / uploads / 2015/10 / docker_suppression_f-300x129.jpg "/>

<p id=Unable to delete a download in progress

These are just a few examples of areas for improvement. But all of this is by no means unacceptable, because as we have already said, Synology is constantly improving its interfaces and functionality based on feedback from its users. The fact remains that Docker is a so-called virtualization solution light and based on the Linux based DSM operating system.
