which Cloud Gaming offer to choose?

Cloud Gaming has been democratized in recent months by announcements from Google Stadia, GeForce Now and even Microsoft xCloud. However, the concept of playing from your sofa or in front of your computer, while the machine or the server that runs the game is hundreds or thousands of kilometers away, has existed since the early 2000s.

As early as 2000, G-cluster demonstrated the feasibility of Cloud Gaming during E3. It will have taken a few more years for the first players (OnLive in 2010 for example, bought since by Sony) to finally offer interesting commercial offers. Technology has since had time to mature and residential Internet connections now offer mostly sufficient bit rates so that it is possible to play streaming in good conditions, on almost any platform.

What is the best Cloud Gaming offer?

If recent news is occupied by Google Stadia (and its launch completely failed), it is not the only player in the market of Cloud Gaming. There are other big companies, some with stadium deals bta and therefore still in development (Microsoft xCloud, Electronic Arts Project Atlas, NVIDIA GeForce Now?).

ISPs like SFR and Orange also offer their own Cloud Gaming offers, often based on the technologies developed by G-cluster. Here is a short summary of the offers already available or in development in terms of Cloud Gaming.

Blacknut

Comes in 2018 to the Cloud Gaming market, Blacknut is a French start-up (cocorico!), more precisely from Rennes. With two subscription plans that look like Netflix, it offers unlimited access to a catalog of 360 games today. There are a lot of family and independent titles, rather than big AAA games. This may be one of its weaknesses, at least for intensive players. On the other hand, the absence of a commitment period and the rather attractive prices are two strong points. Finally, note that there is nothing to indicate that the video stream can go beyond the 720p 30 IPS. The good news is that low bandwidth (6 Mbps) will be enough to access Blacknut services.

Electronic Arts Project Atlas

particularly well-known video game editor, Electronic Arts has also entered the Cloud Gaming market, especially since the announcement of its Project Atlas in October 2018. No commercial offer is currently available, but Electronic Arts still opened a beta access to its infrastructure last September, for a period of two weeks. The launch date of the final offer, its exact characteristics as well as its price list are currently unknown.

Google Stadia

Google has been working on Stadia for some time, and it was only recently that the glove finally officially launched (in a catastrophic way) its Cloud Gaming offer. But between the disastrous launch (code problems, possible latency problems, etc.) and the various disagreements, in particular a catalog of compatible games that are still relatively weak, Google Stadia is not yet the perfect Cloud Gaming service. Note in passing that Google also offers a pack Stadia Premium Edition 129 euros. This includes a Stadia Controller, Chromecast Ultra and 3 months of Stadia Pro subscription.

Microsoft xCloud

With its xCloud project, Microsoft is the main competitor to Google?s Stadia offer. But unlike its competitor, Microsoft has chosen to integrate the games into its subscription instead of asking the user to buy the titles. The icing on the cake, xCloud is compatible with many more games than Stadia, which could tip the scales with players. We are still waiting to know the price list of Microsoft's offer, and especially an exact date of availability of final offers (the service is still in beta phase and is not yet offered in France).

NVIDIA GeForce Now

Responding to its beginnings under the name GRID, NVIDIA?s GeForce Now offer has been available on Windows since early 2018. Previously, you had to have a Shield to access the service. The infrastructure is of course based on cards from the manufacturer and offers maximum Full HD stream at the moment. The offer just left beta status, with a nice surprise: the ability to test GeForce Now for free. NVIDIA's Cloud Gaming service impresses with its performance.

Orange Pass Video Games

Orange offers its customers paid access to a Cloud Gaming service from their television (via the decoder provided), or directly on PC using an application. Based on G-cluster precursor technology, this offer does not offer access to recent large AAA games. But in return, more than 200 games are included in the package.

PlayStation Now

By acquiring Gaikai in 2012, Sony very soon set foot in the world of Cloud Gaming. The Playstation Now service has been available in Europe since 2015 (in beta), the same year as Sony?s takeover of OnLive (another cloud gaming service). If the service was initially accessible from a PS3, a PS Vita, a PS TV and television sets Sony Bravia and Samsung, PlayStation Now is now more accessible only with a PS4 or a Windows PC. In the latter case, the definition will then be limited to 720p.

Vortex

Let's finish with Vortex, a Cloud Gaming service that deserves to be known. With a price equivalent to that of Stadia (and others), Vortex is compatible with a fairly high number of games, including recent titles and / or highly played (Apex, Fortnite, LoL, Destiny 2, PUBG, PES 2018?) . Its only real fault lies in the monthly quota of 50 hours of play. To see if it is enough for you …
