The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) ad the arrival of the new standard SIM card (nano-SIM) whose design was originally designed by Apple.
Several months of negotiations will have been necessary so that the main sellers of smartphones can finally find an agreement but it is now done: the new generation of SIM card is born! Indeed, the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) announced this coming Friday the nano-SIM card whose more compact format will be 40% smaller than the micro-SIM card: 12.3 mm x 8, 8 mm and 0.67 mm thick. A card which will however be backward compatible with existing slots in mobile phones and smartphones thanks to an adapter.
In principle, this new type of card should not be used until next year. Indeed, ETSI has indicated that it will publish the physical details of this new card which is currently being finalized in Japan.
The design of this nano-SIM was largely inspired by the concept suggested by Apple at the start of negotiations with its main competitors, Nokia, Motorola and RIM. These last two recently proposed a revised project taking up a large part of the concept of Apple but approving of certain modifications of the alternative project which the manufacturers had submitted. The Motorola and RIM project proposal thus revealed a lug on one of the slices in order to be able to ensure a push-push manipulation (the spring effect which takes place during the introduction and the exit of the SIM card) rather than having to have resorted to a drawer, which was the solution advanced in the Apple project. However, the site The Verge had indicated that the American group had been opposed to the introduction of such a type of ergot.
The Cupertino firm had replied by offering a slightly enlarged format of its card but the competition accused it that there was a risk that the card could remain blocked in a drawer if it was turned 90 relative to its normal position.
In the end, the future nano-SIM will therefore take up the design suggested by Apple but will include the famous lug proposed by the two competitors. No one knows yet when this new card format will be used in future smartphones. Apple, it could already introduce it with the fourth generation of its iPad expected for April 2013.
